PolyU’s pioneering Service-Learning programme integrates meaningful community service with academic study and reflections to inspire students to apply their professional knowledge and skills in serving the underprivileged and giving back to society.
Since the launch of Service-Learning at PolyU in 2012, thousands of students from different disciplines have participated in Service-Learning projects in Hong Kong, Mainland China and elsewhere, including STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and health care, technology education and development, sustainable community projects, and child and adolescent development.
In just a few years, the Service-Learning subjects offered have increased by more than ten times, with over 4,500 students enrolled in 2022/23. Through the joint efforts of academic departments and community partners and with generous donations from various sectors, our offshore service projects have expanded into more developing countries. The Service-Learning Student Network has also been launched and a platform for international exchange has been developed.
Service-Learning offers an invaluable opportunity for students to make contributions to society while fostering their personal growth. Through engaging in Service-Learning activities, students can broaden their perspectives and cultivate good qualities such as empathy for people in need, self-confidence, communication skills and cross-cultural awareness.
By the 2027/28 academic year, PolyU aspires to send half of its students to take part in Service-Learning projects outside Hong Kong. We invite you to join hands with PolyU to maximise the impact of our community service efforts and nurture future leaders and global citizens for our society by donating to the PolyU Service-Learning Fund.
