The University's Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation recently launched the 3-year PolyU Jockey Club "Operation SoInno" social innovation programme to develop innovative solutions for social issues.
PolyU and Shenzhen University spearheaded the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Rail Transit Joint Innovation Union with 10 other universities and enterprises to promote rail transit system development in the region.

Monitoring system keeps track of elderly Prof. Zheng Yong-ping of the Department of Biomedical Engineering has led a team to develop a multi-functional monitoring system for elderly with dementia. The system can track elderly's respiration and activities in bed to prevent them from falling or wandering away.
With the generous support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, PolyU launched the Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub to promote gerontechnology products and services for the enhancement of the living quality of the elderly. A "Day Experience Centre" was set up on campus to showcase gerontechnology products.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was awarded the Lui Che Woo Prize – 2018 Prize for World Civilisation. Secretary-General of WMO Prof. Petteri Taalas delivered a public lecture presenting WMO's efforts to tackle climate change.
