Breathing Room screening
Chinese white dolphin was the mascot of the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. After 20 years, with all the threats resulting from human activities, the number of dolphins has dropped 75 percent since 2003. Although researchers keep monitoring the abundance and hope the alarming decline rate will raise the awareness of the public, the trend continues without signs of recovery. Daphne Wong is a young nature filmmaker who spent 2 years to document the plight of Chinese white dolphins. In the documentary Breathing Room, stakeholders from different sectors were interviewed and shared their views on the conservation of the dolphins.
Mr. Taison Cheng (Chairman, Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society)
Chairman of Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society and full-time research associate in Hong Kong Cetacean Research Project. He has been actively involved in different campaigns related to the conservation of Chinese white dolphin including the “30 Third Runway Victims” in 2014 and “Saving the Handover Mascot” in 2017. He also has a great concern of dolphin captivity issue around the world. He is also the main author of two books, “30 Third Runway Victims” and “Dolphin were Stolen from the Ocean”.

Sea debris has a huge impact on marine environment and is resulting in the sickness and death of millions of marine animals, including whales and dolphins. HKDCS organizes beach cleanups near dolphin habitat to help cleaning up the seas of Hong Kong. And in the cleanups, sea glass is one of the most commonly found rubbish on the beaches. In the sea glass workshop, participants will give the sea glass a second life by upcycling them to jewelries or decoration pieces.

Despite its small size, Hong Kong is a city with rich biodiversity, including endemic species of amphibians and reptiles. People’s fear and misconceptions often lead to negligence of the important ecological roles of herpetofauna. Meanwhile, the distance among cities, rural areas and nature has been shortened, resulting in an increase of conflicts between people and herpetofauna. However, herpetofauna are indispensable to us and nature. During the seminar and animal encounter session, let us rediscover and appreciate the beauty and importance of our neighbors in the wild.
Mr. Henry Chan (Conservation Officer, Hong Kong Society of Herpetology Foundation)
Chan Man Ho Henry received his Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology & Biodiversity from The University of Hong Kong. After graduation, he joined Hong Kong Society of Herpetology Foundation as a Conservation Officer. His work focuses on environmental education and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. He is currently the coordinator of ECF - Herpetofauna Conservation Ambassador Training Programme. He is also a wildlife artist, incorporating his ecological knowledge into illustrations to raise people’s awareness on nature conservation.
