The SHTM has been involved in a United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) project to upgrade the Guilin Institute of Tourism (GLIT) to university level. As part of that ongoing commitment, a group of GLIT teachers were in Hong Kong during April for a two-week "Professional Hospitality Teacher Programme" organised by the SHTM.
In Week 1, the GLIT teachers were provided with knowledge of teaching skills and undertook class observations to help them learn how different methods can be used in and integrated into different kinds of classes. In Week 2, PolyU instructors continued their focus on active learning and teaching skills. The GLIT teachers practised what they had learned and were evaluated on how they applied their new knowledge in the classroom.
The underlying purpose of the programme was to guide the GLIT teachers as they developed their teaching practice, which will in turn help their students become active learners. The ultimate goal is to develop graduates who meet the needs and fulfil the expectations of the hospitality and tourism industry in China and beyond.
This tailor-made training programme was delivered through learner-centred methods using a balanced mix of interactive lectures; individual and group assignments that required independent learning; discussion, problem-solving, and simulation activities; cases, field trips and study tours; observation of classroom practice and micro-teaching; and feedback, individual coaching and mentoring.
Implementing an international programme is a whole new model for China tourism education. The SHTM's selection for the project is largely attributable to its internationally recognised programmes with quality academic staff, who understand China and its language. The School believes that the assistance rendered will ensure the long-term sustainability of human resource development in the Mainland tourism industry.
