Prof. John Lee Hak-shan is an international authority in the areas of shock wave physics, detonation and explosion, and nuclear engineering. By applying his academic knowledge to hazard mitigation, treatment of hazardous waste and investigations into accidental explosions, he was appointed as a United Nations Development Programme Consultant on industrial chemical hazards to the Philippines, collaborating with the Ministry of Metallurgy in China, White Sands Test Facility and Langley Research Center of NASA, as well as the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Brookhaven National Laboratory. He also worked with the Netherlands Technologisch Laboratory, the Norwegian Defence Construction Services, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in Quebec in Canada, British Nuclear Fuels, and Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation of Japan. Having made outstanding contributions to the field, Prof. Lee received the Numa Manson Gold Medal from the Institute for the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems, as well as the Dinoizy Smolenski Medal from the Polish Academy of Sciences.
