Summer Throwback @ Alumni Atrium

On 18 August 2023, the Alumni Affairs Office (AAO) hosted its first-ever retro party at the Alumni Atrium. It brought together around 70 alumni spanning different generations, and many of them arrived in their finest vintage attire.   Ms Wanze Li, Interim Director of Alumni Affairs, warmly welcomed the participants and invited them to take group photos commemorating their graduation anniversaries. Next, Prof. Brian Kwok, Associate Professor from the School of Design, shared insights about neon lights in the city that set the stage for an illuminating evening. The party came alive with a live band performance by the PolyU Alumni Band comprised of Eagle Chan and Stephanie Lau. The golden oldies songs created a nostalgic atmosphere, prompting our graduates to relive the cherished memories while mingling with one another. The Alumni Atrium underwent a remarkable transformation into a nostalgic wonderland, complete with snacks, games, and handicraft stalls that took participants down memory lane. One particularly popular spot was the photo corner, adorned with a backdrop reminiscent of old Hong Kong, where participants eagerly posed for Polaroids.   Another highlight of the party was the highly anticipated best-dressed competition. The judging panel was formed by: Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President of PolyU; Ms Wanze Li; Ir Yau Kwok-fai, President of the Federation of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA); Ir Johnny Fan Siu-kay, Director of FHKPUAA; and Ir Tsui Tack-kong. Together with participant votes, the deserving winners of “My Favourite Vintage Outfit”, “Best-dressed Alumnus” and “Best-dressed Alumna” were presented with exclusive gifts. The diverse group of alumni enjoyed the array of engaging activities throughout the evening, leaving with smiles on their faces and a special burlap tote from AAO as a memento. Alumni Tourcation – Innovation Adventure and Your Tech Treasure

Despite the red rainstorm warning, the sense of adventure burned bright in the hearts of our Alumni Tourcation participants. This campus tour featured PolyU’s Industrial Centre (IC) on the last Saturday of July, attracting overwhelming registrations from responsive alumni who secured their spots for an eye-opening weekend morning. The alumni explored almost every corner of IC, visiting various specialty rooms that showcased PolyU’s state-of-the-art equipment. The highlights included 3D printing machines that aid research and teaching needs, as well as the Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HiVE) that makes use of virtual technology to create a lifelike environment for teaching and learning. Our participants also stepped into two simulated workshops: the Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Lab, an advanced warehouse space using the world’s first autonomous case-handling robot launched by Hai Robotics (a unicorn founded by two PolyU young alumni); and the Smart Elderly Home, a hi-tech home for the elderly with installations that help them overcome their daily obstacles. In addition, there was an interactive DIY workshop on our itinerary. The alumni assembled different parts into a keychain carrying a charm with laser-printed PolyU campus and logo, which was a trophy for their conquest of PolyU IC.
