PolyU Graduating Class Ambassadors

This year, around 200 final year students from all faculties and schools of PolyU as well as the Hong Kong Community College have been appointed as PolyU Graduating Class Ambassadors (GCAs).  They are committed to supporting their alma mater to maintain close ties with its graduates.  They would take the lead to keep regular communication with their fellows and help promote University’s latest development and alumni activities to classmates. Nearly 100 GCAs attended the briefing sessions on 17 and 18 May 2021 at Alumni Atrium. They were excited to learn about their important roles and meet with other enthusiastic graduating students at the events. The Ambassadors look forward to supporting and participating in the alumni activities and University events.

The first MOOC about Visual Function and Eye Health on edX

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed by PolyU School of Optometry about vision science, the first of its kind on the edX platform, is now open for enrolment. This course develops your understanding of vision and discovers how visual functions relate to your daily life. It consists of 6 modules including structures and functions of the eye, the resolution of the eye, depth perception, colour vision, common eye conditions and how to protect your eyes. Whether you have a background in vision science or not, you are more than welcome to join. The first run of the course will start on 31 May! PolyU SHTM Mainland Alumni Forum cum Reunion - Shanghai

On 15 May 2021, PolyU School of Hotel and Tourism Management Mainland Alumni Network (PolyU SHTMMAN) successfully organised a forum cum gathering dinner in Shanghai, bringing together around 200 alumni from Yangtze River Delta to witness the establishment of PolyU SHTMMAN and share valuable memories in PolyU, as well as great ideas on innovation and talent development in the industry. The establishment of the Alumni Network provides an ideal platform for SHTMers to get connected with each other.  Professor Kaye Chon, Dean of School of Hotel and Tourism Management, and Dr Olive Wang, Senior Manager of Chinese Mainland Affairs Office, joined the event from Hong Kong. Professor Chon congratulated the establishment of PolyU SHTMMAN and Dr Wang hoped for the Network’s prosperous development in the future. Mr Elton Sun, President of PolyU SHTMMAN delivered a remarks and showed his enthusiasm in contributing to SHTM alumni. At the event, alumni from HTM2000 to HTM2020 shared their precious memories in the University. Renowned SHTM alumni shared their experiences and insights on talent development, as well as the new challenges and business opportunities in the industry. The 5th webinar of “Enlighten@PolyU Series” explores PropTech and its impacts

The 5th webinar of “Enlighten@PolyU Series” on the topic of “How does PropTech impact our lives” was successfully held on 27 April 2021. Distinguished scholar, alumni and supporter of the University were brought together to share views on how PropTech is revolutionizing the industries, reshaping our homes and workplaces, and impacting our daily lives. The event was jointly organized by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office, Institute for Entrepreneurship and The PolyU DBA Alumni Association Limited (DBAAA). It received 760 registrations. The webinar was presented by Prof. Eddie Hui Chi-man MH, Associate Head and Professor, Department of Building and Real Estate, PolyU; Dr William Chan, Advisor, Kerry Properties Limited and Ir Andrew Young, Associate Director (Innovation), Sino Group.  Dr Charles Lam, Managing Director – Real Estate, Baring Private Equity Asia and Chairman, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University DBA Alumni Association Limited was the moderator. Dr Lam presented a market overview of PropTech to start the dialogue. Prof. Hui introduced the rise and trend of PropTech, and talked about its current development in Hong Kong. Dr Chan elaborated the impact of PropTech from the perspectives of end-users, contributors and drivers, and used the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as an illustration. Ir Young shared his experience and some examples of the use of PropTech. He revealed that a group of industry players has set up an alliance to create an ecosystem to accelerate the adoption and/or investment of PropTech solutions.  The panel discussion has attracted many insightful questions from the participants and led to in-depth discussion on the topic, covering applications and integrations of PropTech, as well as issues on redevelopment and sustainability. Apart from technology advancement, the group agreed that human factor plays an important role in the growth and development of PropTech. Please view the event recording below.

2021/22 PolyU Presidential PhD Fellowship Scheme

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is now inviting outstanding applicants to apply for the PolyU Presidential PhD Fellowship Scheme for full-time PhD programmes in 2021/22.   Scholarship Package Successful applicants will be granted the following scholarship package* to support their research study at PolyU and living expenses in Hong Kong: PolyU Presidential PhD Scholarship including a tuition fee waiver (HK$42,100 per annum) and a cash award (HK$40,000 in Year 1 and HK$20,000 for the remaining years of the normal study period, subject to satisfactory academic performance); Studentship (up to HK$319,200 per annum) and conference attendance grant (up to HK$13,300 per annum), depending on the applicants’ academic and research achievements; and Associated Money to cover research-related expenses (HK$20,000 per annum). * The University reserves the rights of final decision on the offer of scholarship package and its exact provision.   Eligibility Applicants who apply for the PolyU Presidential PhD Fellowship Scheme shall: meet the general entrance requirements for PolyU's PhD programmes;  meet the English language requirements of PolyU; have obtained a PhD admission offer from a top university in the world; and demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance and research ability.   Application Applicants should submit an online application, including a valid PhD offer letter from a top university and the required supporting documents, via the eAdmission within the application period.  The application period is from 1 April to 31 July 2021. Consideration of applications is on rolling basis until all fellowship quotas are filled.   Result Announcement Successful applicants will receive an admission offer from PolyU via email between June and September 2021. The 4th webinar of “Enlighten@PolyU” Series on “How Could Future Education be Empowered with A.I.?”

On 30 March 2021, “Enlighten@PolyU” Series “How Could Future Education be Empowered by A.I.?” was successfully organised by Chinese Mainland Affairs Office, PolyU, co-organised with iFlytek A.I. Light. The event attracted over 230,000 visits by live-streaming via different broadcast platforms. We are pleased to have Professor Haitian Lu, Director of Chinese Mainland Affairs and Professor of Law and Finance, School of Accounting and Finance, PolyU, Mr Shijin Wang, Vice President of Education Business Group and Director of Research Institute of A.I. Education of iFlytek, Ms Wanqiong Zhang, Executive Principal of Beijing New Talent Academy and our alumnus Mr Andy Yu, Co-Founder of CreatiCode AI and CEO of Shanghai Sheng Shang Investment LP as speakers sharing their insights and exchanging ideas on A.I. on education. During the webinar, Professor Lu introduced how A.I. could enhance the personalised learning experience of students, increase the efficiency of teaching staff on knowledge transmission and improve the Universities’ effectiveness on resources utilisation. Mr Wang on the other hand, shared that by utilising A.I. in the teaching and learning process, teachers are able to lessen the burden on teaching while students are able to achieve desire learning outcome and uplift their confidence and interest in learning. Ms Zhang contributed her insight into how A.I. could identify for students the best education path and to equip them as the talents for the modern society. Mr Yu further extended the topic of A.I. education by discussing the A.I. for social good in future education, and the human awareness is considered to be the source in promoting this objective. The sharing by the four speakers made up a wonderful evening and solicited many in-depth discussions and exchange of ideas with the participants. A.I. with no doubt will bring a brand new page on human development, and the education empowered by A.I. will inevitably open up a new paradigm for future education.
