2019 Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting

On 1 June 2019, the first PolyU Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting, organised by Alumni Affairs and Development Office (AADO), was held at PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute.  Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President, together with alumni representatives from six mainland alumni Networks and Federation of PolyU Alumni Association, attended the meeting to explore the development of alumni affairs of PolyU.  Dr Miranda Lou introduced the latest development and achievement of research and student development of PolyU to alumni representatives.  The representative from Office of Careers and Placement Services (CAPS) conducted a briefing to the alumni representatives, hoping to receive their support for the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme. Thereafter, Ms Maggie Chen, CEO of PolyU Base (Shenzhen) Limited and Chief Representative of PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute, led a guided tour for the alumni representatives. The alumni representatives actively shared views and insights about “how alumni networks and associations support the University’s student development" and "how alumni networks and associations contribute to the alma mater and strengthen the bond of the PolyU alumni family”.  The meeting has a fruitful conclusion. The alumni networks and associations will continuously support PolyU and actively explore means for student development, research collaboration, and alumni engagement for the alma mater.  The second PolyU Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting was tentatively scheduled for the end of 2019 in Beijing.

MEET and DRINK – ITC alumni

The Alumni Affairs and Development Office (AADO) has recently launched a new series of “Meet and Drink” to connect alumni from the same discipline over a casual drinks. The first “Meet and Drink” with alumni of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC) was held on 31 May 2019. Around 70 ITC graduates, including renowned fashion designers, management of fashion and merchandising companies and entrepreneurs, came together at the Alumni Atrium for networking and exchange. They were delighted to join the exclusive session to the Annual MA Fashion & Textile Design Exhibition, which showcased the works of the new design talents. Located in Core A on PolyU campus, the Alumni Atrium is a convenient and versatile venue for exchange and networking. Pre-retirement Talk Series Building a rich retired life

On 22 May 2019, Mr Lam Chiu Ying, Former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, was invited to deliver a talk on the topic of “Building a rich retired life”. He talked about his ten-year retirement life and shared his insightful ideas on how to prepare for a fruitful life after retirement. The talk was one of the pre-retirement talk series jointly organised by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office of PolyU and the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations, attracting over 250 alumni and guests.

“Gathering with Zhe-Li Friends 2019 ” - Opportunity for Hangzhou: Future City Forum

On 18 May 2019, the “2019 Opportunities for Future Communities in Zhejiang" forum was organised by the Zhejiang University – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Joint Centre Alumni Network and supported by the alumni enterprise Enjoy Town in Guali Enjoy Town. More than 100 alumni and representatives from sister University alumni associations from all over the country attended the forum. Professor Jia Shenghua, Director of IRE programme of Zhejiang University, a number of outstanding IRE alumni, HTM alumni and QM alumni were invited to speak at the forum. Speakers and alumni had lively sharings and discussions, enriching the Forum. “Gathering with Zhe-Li Friends” is a main brand of ZhejiangU-PolyU Joint Centre Alumni Network. It is intended to build a platform for alumni exchange, which does not only strengthen the close ties between alumni and the alma maters, but also promotes the close cooperation among alumni.

Get Together@Alumni Atrium - Special Talk on Myopia Control and Guided Tour to Optometry Clinic

On 7 May 2019, around 30 alumni came back to PolyU to join the special talk on the latest research of myopia control by Dr Rachel Chun, Senior Optometrist, School of Optometry, PolyU. The talk was followed by a guided tour to visit one of the best and leading optometry teaching clinics in Asia, the Optometry Clinic on PolyU campus. They toured around the clinic to learn more about the eye care services, eye research projects and equipment.

Honouring nine distinguished alumni at the Award Presentation Ceremony and Dinner of Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2019

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) presented the "Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2019" to nine alumni at the award presentation ceremony and dinner on 30 April 2019 at Hotel ICON. More than 300 distinguished guests including awardees and their families, proposers, award recipients of past years, senior management and staff of PolyU attended the event. Dr the Hon. Victor Lo Chung-wing, Guest of Honour and Chairman of the Panel of Judges, Prof. Philip C. H. Chan, Interim President of PolyU and Mr Alex Wong Chung-bong, President of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations presented the awards to the nine distinguished alumni. They are (in alphabetical order of last name): Mr Chu Chen-on, Co-founder of October Pictures Limited, Dr Herman Lau Mun-cheung, Hospital Chief Executive of Bradbury Hospice, Cheshire Home, Shatin, and Shatin Hospital, Sr Lau Ping-cheung, GBS, JP, Managing Director of Biel Asset Management Company Limited and PolyU Council Member, Ir Arthur Lee Kam-hung, Founder and Chairman of Kolinker Group and PolyU Council Member, Mr Alex Lui Chun-wan, a renowned architect and city planner and PolyU Court Member, Mr Elton Ng Chun-ting, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Centre of Rehabilitation & Exercising Specialist, Mrs Natalia Seng Sze Ka-mee, Vice Chairman of Tricor HK and Offshore and Member of Tricor China Management Committee of Tricor Group and Tricor Services Limited, Mr Dominic Tam Jo-tak, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Combine Will International Holdings Limited, and Mr Marcellus Wong Yui-keung, Vice Chairman of AMTD Group. Addressing the event, Prof. Philip Chan commended the awardees have earned their personal achievements through hard work and perseverance, and made exemplary contributions to their professions and society. Dr Victor Lo praised that the awardees were inspirational leaders and role models for our young generations. Other highlights of the event included live dance performance by PolyU students. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Alex Wong. Jointly organised by PolyU and the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA), the biennial "Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award" aims at honouring outstanding graduates of PolyU and its forerunners – the Government Trade School, the Hong Kong Technical College and the Hong Kong Polytechnic – for their distinguished professional accomplishments and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. Launched in late 1996 and now came to the twelfth time, a total of 82 distinguished alumni in various professions have been honoured in the award selection.

RUC - PolyU Doctor of Management Beijing Fintech Forum

The first Doctor of Management (DMgt) Forum cum Beijing Fintech Summit has been successfully organised by the Renmin University of China - The Hong Kong Polytechnic University DMgt Alumni Network in Renmin University of China, Beijing on 31 March 2019. With the theme of "New Trends, New Finance, New Technology and New Pattern", the summit invited renowned speakers including university professors, leaders and experts in the industry as well as alumni of the two Universities to deliver keynote speeches on topics of financial supervision, financial technology, financial innovation and other related issues. They provided insights into the drive for global financial technology reform. Guests and alumni enjoyed an inspiring weekend together.

PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network Inauguration Ceremony

On 9 March 2019, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) celebrated the establishment of its fifth Alumni Network in the Chinese mainland, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shanghai Alumni Network, with some 220 distinguished guests and alumni in Andaz Xintiandi Hotel, Shanghai. Dr Miranda Lou, PolyU Executive Vice President, and Miss Victoria Tang, Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs, Shanghai of the HKSAR, officiated at the event. We are honoured to have invited PolyU alumnus, Mr Michael Ross, Vice Chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), Honorary Chairman of Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in China, and the Shanghai Magnolia Silver Awardee, to deliver a keynote speech at the dinner, sharing his touching stories on working and living in Shanghai. Representatives from Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA), RenminU – PolyU Doctor of Management Alumni Network, Pearl River Delta Alumni Network, ZhejiangU – PolyU Joint Centre Alumni Network and Mainland & International Sub-committee of FHKPUAA joined in congratulating the PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network.

PolyU Graduating Class Ambassador 2019 Kick-off Ceremony

More than 90 students participated at the “PolyU Graduating Class Ambassador 2019 Kick-off Ceremony” held on 26 February 2019 at the Alumni Atrium. These students are full-time final-year sub-degree and degree undergraduates and post-graduates, nominated by the eight Faculties and Schools of PolyU and the Hong Kong Community College. They are committed to supporting the efforts of PolyU in maintaining close ties with its graduates and strengthening its alumni network.  The ceremony was officiated by Ir Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student Affairs) of PolyU, Mr Alex Wong Chun-bon, President of Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations, Prof. Esmond Mok, Dean of Students of PolyU and Ms Belinda Chow, Director of Alumni Affairs and Development of PolyU.  Addressing in the ceremony, Prof. Ben Young encouraged the ambassadors to make good use of their knowledge and skills obtained from PolyU to serve the community, and invited them to help their alma mater create a vibrant alumni networking scenes both locally and aboard.  Witnessed by PolyU staff members, alumni leaders and former ambassadors, appointment certificates were presented to the new ambassadors. They were delighted to meet with and exchange ideas with the alumni leaders at the networking session held immediately after the ceremony.

Alumni Talk Series: Truth from Life Adventure

Mr Elton Ng, PolyU alumnus and consultant physiotherapist, shared his experiences in hiking and a video of his journey to the summit of Mt. Everest with fellow alumni on 22 January 2019. He also talked about his passion for contributing his knowledge to society and encouraged alumni to pursue their dreams. The talk was one of the Alumni Talk Series jointly organized by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office of PolyU and the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations, and attracted a packed audience from different age groups.
