This year, over 150 final year students from all faculties and schools of PolyU as well as the Hong Kong Community College have been appointed as PolyU Graduating Class Ambassadors (GCAs).  They are committed to supporting their alma mater to maintain close ties with its graduates.  Despite social distancing, five online briefing sessions were held on 15 May 2020 to kick off the scheme, in which the GCAs got together to learn more about their roles.  They would take the lead to keep regular communication with their fellows and help promote University’s latest development and alumni activities to classmates.

Reusable Face Shields designed by PolyU

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought great challenges to all walks of life.  At PolyU, we have been closely monitoring the situation and have devised plans to help contain the spread of the coronavirus and seek sustainable measures to cope with the situation. In February 2020, we designed and started producing disposable face shields for the Hospital Authority in order to alleviate the immediate need for protective gear amongst frontline medical professionals.  In April, we launched two new reusable face shields, which provide enhanced protection to those in need and help contain the spread of the coronavirus in the community.   The “General Use Face Shield” (General Version) is suitable for everyone; while the “Extra Protection Face Shield” (Enhanced Version) offers broader protection by covering the forehead and hair.   We are delighted to announce that PolyU alumni can order the face shields online now!

Overcoming difficult times in solidarity

The COVID-19 pandemic has been seriously impacting all businesses and all walks of life.  At PolyU, we are particularly concerned with the financial challenges faced by some of our students and their families due to the current situation. Therefore, we have decided to establish the PolyU COVID-19 Student Support Fund to provide support to our students who are greatly affected by COVID-19. The Fund aims to relieve the financial hardship of PolyU students in need; strengthen the spirit of solidarity of the PolyU community to tide over the difficult times; and enhance the resilience of our students.  To kick-start the Fund, the Management team (including the President, Deputy President and Provost, Executive Vice President and all Vice Presidents) will donate 10% of our salaries over a period of 12 months from April 2020. We also appeal to you, our alumni, other members of the PolyU community and our supporters to contribute to this meaningful cause.  To support and find out more about the PolyU COVID-19 Student Support Fund, please click the Fund page.  We believe that mutual support is the key to overcoming this public health crisis. In addition to extending care and concern to our students, it is heartening to see that our staff, students and alumni have also extended their care to the wider community. Our researchers have supported frontline medical professionals by developing specially-designed 3D-printed face shields for their enhanced protection, and they have also innovated the world’s most comprehensive automated multiplex diagnostic system to provide quick virus testing. Do visit the dedicated section on the PolyU website: Combat COVID-19 in concert 凝心聚力 携手抗疫 to know more about how the University community has been contributing to the global fight against the pandemic. You will find that in the face of the challenges, PolyU members have indeed lived up to the spirit of the University’s motto: “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”.

The 2nd Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting 2019 cum Dinner with President Jin-Guang Teng

On 21 December 2019, the second PolyU Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting was held in Beijing. President Professor Jin-Guang Teng and Executive Vice President Dr Miranda Lou, together with 20 alumni leaders from all six mainland alumni networks, attended the meeting to explore the development of alumni affairs in the coming year. President Teng shared the latest situation on campus and the restoration plan. Dr Lou sincerely thanked the Pearl River Delta Alumni Network for their generous support and assistance in providing arrival and accommodation services for more than 300 PolyU Mainland students who left Hong Kong for Shenzhen during the emergency period in mid-November. All alumni leaders have expressed their goodwill to help  rebuild PolyU’s reputation. They actively shared views on and insights into how alumni networks could contribute to the restoration, support student development and strengthen the bond of the PolyU alumni family. Together with Dr Lou and supported by PolyU Beijing Alumni Network, President Teng also met with 70 mainland alumni in the evening to share first-hand information about  PolyU’s recent situation. It was not just a good opportunity for networking and exchange for PolyU alumni, but also an embodiment of alumni support for the University’s development.
