PolyU Delegation Visits Hong Kong Polytechnic University Association (Singapore)

On 25 January 2024, Dr Lam Tai-fai, GBS, JP, Council Chairman of PolyU, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, JP, President of PolyU, and Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) of PolyU, led a delegation to attend a dinner gathering hosted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Association (Singapore).  The dinner was graced with the presence of Mr Owen Fung Ho-yin, JP, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore. Dr Lam warmly welcomed all the guests on behalf of the University, expressing his delight at meeting many PolyU alumni and friends from Singapore, especially the young faces. Prof. Teng then presented a comprehensive overview of the University, highlighting its latest developments and accomplishments in research, innovative programmes, and global collaborations. He also shared the encouraging results attained by PolyU in different world rankings, and introduced top scholars from various disciplines to everyone in attendance. The exchange of ideas and experiences during the event further strengthened the bond between PolyU and its alumni community in Singapore. Prof. Teng expressed sincere gratitude to the Association, in particular Vice President Ms Carmen Lee. The Association has provided ongoing support and contributions to the growth and success of PolyU’s alumni network in Singapore. Apart from gathering with alumni, the delegation also attended a series of meetings and visits, engaging with university leaders in Vietnam and Malaysia to foster collaborative research and academic exchanges.

OPAA 2023 Annual General Meeting and Luncheon

On 25 January, 20 members of the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Association as well as PolyU representatives joined the 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM). During the meeting, they received the President’s Report, adopted Accounts of the Association for the year ended 30 June 2023, and re-appointed KPMG to be the Honorary Auditors for the ensuring year. Everyone gathered for lunch after the AGM, fostering mutual acquaintance and exchanging recent updates. They also discussed with one another the annual plan for the Association. The Board of Directors expressed gratitude for all the enthusiastic opinions, and eagerly anticipated future occasions to convene and contribute to the alma mater.

Visit from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Southern California) Association

On 9 January 2024, the Alumni Affairs Office warmly welcomed five alumni leaders from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Southern California) Association. They were Ms Shirley Yeung, Ms K K Yeung, Mr Leo Chu and Mrs Ivy Chu, and Mr Beta Tam.  The overseas alumni were delighted to meet with Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of the University, to learn about the latest developments and milestones of their alma mater. They were especially interested in the University’s accomplishments in medical health research, pledging to actively assist PolyU in expanding cooperation opportunities for the continuous advancement of the field. The group also visited various iconic landmarks on campus, including PolyU Main Entrance and the University Square.   Founded in 2007 in Los Angeles, the Association has been a steadfast supporter of the University. With over 70 members, it actively organises networking activities in Southern California. President Teng expressed his gratitude to the Association for its ongoing contributions, in particular the generous provision of scholarships to PolyU students and the valuable advice offered to exchange students.

OPAA Hike

At the beginning of 2024, Mr Elton Ng Chun-ting, Honorary Secretary of the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Association, organised a hiking event on 6 January to kick-start the energetic new year with outstanding PolyU alumni in the great outdoors. Ir Dr Samson Tam Wai-ho, JP, President of the Association, provided strong support, and some current and former members of the Board of Directors attended the event with their families, friends, and student mentees. The group embarked on their journey from Lung Fu Shan Country Park in Pok Fu Lam to The Peak with laughter and joy. After delighting in the magnificent panoramic view of Victoria Harbour from High West and Lugard Road Lookout, the group gathered at a nostalgic tea house for a meal, concluding the activity perfectly. The Association plans to organise more similar outdoor activities in the future, allowing recipients of the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award to escape the hustle and bustle, unwind, and reunite with one another.

Xi'an Jiaotong University - The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shaanxi Alumni Reunion

On 4 January 2024, the “Xi'an Jiaotong University - The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shaanxi Alumni Dinner” was successfully held in Xi'an. Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President, Professor Geoffrey Shen, Associate Vice President (Global Partnerships), Professor Lu Haitian, Director of Mainland Development and Dr Sean Xu, Assistant Director of Mainland Development attended the event. Representatives from PolyU Mainland Alumni Networks and over 360 PolyU alumni reunited. President Teng provided an update on the latest developments and plans of the University. After that, President Teng, together with Professor Xi Guang, Vice President of Xi'an Jiaotong University, presented the academic award parchments to the graduates of the collaborative programme, MSc Information System, who were unable to attend their graduation ceremony. Dr Lou and Professor Xi presented the certificate of appreciation to the Executive Committee members of PolyU Tongli Alumni Network. The event concluded successfully with a variety of programmes and joyful laughter.

Strategic Moves @ Alumni Atrium

On 27 December 2023, around 50 board game enthusiasts gathered at PolyU for the highly anticipated event, “Strategic Moves @ Alumni Atrium”. It was a unique occasion that brought together graduates and current students across generations, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition. The event marked the first-ever collaboration between the Alumni Affairs Office and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Student Affairs Office Chess and Boardgames Club. According to the alumni’s favourites, the Alumni Atrium was adorned with a colourful array of chessboards, card games, and many popular board games. Experienced chess lovers shared their strategies with beginners, encouraging a sense of community and knowledge exchange. The gathering buzzed with energy as people moved from one game to another, forging connections and building friendships through their shared love for board games. Monopoly, Werewolves, Splendor and other chess battles enthralled the attendees. As the event drew to a close, many alumni eagerly anticipated the second board game gathering, where they could once again make strategic moves within the PolyU community!

The 40th Graduation Anniversary Reunion of 1983 Translation Graduates

Following the earlier visit by the 1983 graduates in Accountancy, another group of alumni who studied Translation and graduated in the same year returned to PolyU for a memorable reunion on 20 December. The Alumni Affairs Office (AAO) extended a warm welcome to the group at the Alumni Atrium, presenting them with special souvenirs to commemorate the occasion. Reuniting after a long time, the alumni joyfully shared stories and reminisced about their time at the University. They were also thrilled to hear about the latest developments and updates at their alma mater.  Eager to relive their cherished memories, the group embarked on a guided campus tour. They took many photos at the University Square and seized the opportunity to visit the Pao Yue-kong Library. On the Library’s new sixth floor, the campus scenery and the panoramic view of the Victoria Harbour captivated everyone. With each step, the group rediscovered the familiar buildings, classrooms, and iconic spots that shaped their university experience.  The heartwarming reunion concluded with a delightful dinner at a campus restaurant. Everyone eagerly discussed plans for their upcoming 50th Graduation Anniversary celebrations. Laughter filled the air as they shared anecdotes from their time as students, strengthening the bonds forged across four decades.
