University of Limerick, Ireland, July 28 - August 1, 2008.
According to the prize citation, Houde Han, Zhongyi Huang, and R. Bruce
Kellogg were awarded the 2008 Pieter Hemker Prize
"for their contribution to the goal of designing the best computational
algorithm for the Hemker problem". The cited work was their
development of "the tailored finite point method" for singularly
perturbed problems.
Entrants for the prize were judged
based on their ability to address the following two objectives:
1. To compute numerical approximations for all values of the singular
perturbation parameter within the range [1e-8,1] with a prescribed global
pointwise accuracy.
2. To minimise the amount of computational work (on a desktop computer) to
achieve any prescribed tolerance."

科学计算前沿国际研讨会暨庆祝 973 计划成立十周年活动
计算数学通讯, 2008, 第3期
科学计算前沿国际研讨会暨庆祝 973 计划成立十周年活动,于 2008年6月10日-13 日在武夷山
举行。包括中国科学院院士石钟慈研究员,中国工程院院士崔俊芝研究员,973项目首席科学家
陈志明研究员,科技部基础研究中心宋海刚博士,973 项目专家委员会,项目子课题组成员及海
外咨询专家等在内的30余名专家学者参加此次会议。
会议成员主要围绕973项目迄今所取得的研究成果以及项目今后的发展方向与前景展开热烈讨
论。四个项目子课题组组长汇报了各自课题组的主要研究内容及近两年的研究成果,并就课
题组今后的发展与专家们进行了深入的探讨。来自海内外的学者代表报告了所做研究的最新
进展,内容涉及信息科学、大气物理、复合材料、天体力学等多个领域,包括:涡流拉伸的
动力损耗和三维不可压缩流的非线性稳定性研究,高效鲁棒方法在矩阵计算和电子结构计算
中的应用,麦克斯韦方程反问题的研究与前景展望,生物与工程系统中多尺度物理模型的数值
计算方法研究,对流扩散问题的高阶数值方法研究,流体移动网格方法与多重网格方法研究,
数值模拟过程中信息与统计自动获取,以及成像方法的近期研究成果等。丰富的研究成果使国
内学者及时全面的了解到海外专家们的最新工作进展,开拓了大家尤其是国内年轻学者的眼
界。同时,通过参会者的相互沟通与共同讨论,从中发现了许多具有进一步研究价值的问题,
也对项目进一步工作提出了更高的要求。
参会的两位院士与资深学者在肯定大家研究工作的同时,指出了目前项目发展还存在的问
题以及今后的发展方式,随着大规模科学计算方法的进步,理论研究应当越来越多地与实
际应用相结合,不断地引入更多更新的实际问题,建立由方法找应用和由应用找方法两种
发展模式,使之相互弥补,相互促进。与此同时,还要关注基础数学对科学计算发展所起到
的启发作用,在计算结果中发现现象,引入数学理论的研究成果,从中得到新的研究方法。
专家指出,计算数学研究在注重本领域的凝聚力的同时,应当更多地注重与交叉学科间的
合作,比如计算物理、大气物理等。我们应大力促进一、二课题组向应用方面转移,加强
与信息科学专家间的沟通和深入了解。应打破目前科学计算领域专家学者过于集中的局面,
将人员进行适当扩散,涉足到更广泛的应用学科研究当中,以增加计算科学的辐射作用,
这将在给研究人员提供更广泛空间的同时,也将考验其个方面的综合能力,既是机遇又
是挑战。总之,要将大规模科学计算研究更好的进行下去,需要我们找准方向,抓住契
机,适时准确切入,保持项目发展的稳定性和前沿性,以期待其更广阔的发展前景。

北京国际计算物理中心2008年“偏微分方程及图像处理研究班”纪要
计算数学通讯, 2008, 第3期
在国家自然科学基金委、北京应用物理与计算数学研究所的大力支持下,北京国际计算物理中
心于2008年6月23-27日在北京应用物理与计算数学研究所会议中心举办了主题为“偏微分方程
及图像处理研究班”。本次研究班的负责人是北京应用物理与计算数学研究所的郭柏灵院士,
主讲教师是挪威卑尔根大学数学系台雪城教授、美国Rochester技术所施鹏程教授、美国佐治亚
工学院周好民博士和香港浸会大学数学系吴国宝教授。参加研究班的成员是国内在偏微分方程和
图像处理方面具有一定经验的科技人员,其中有16位邀请人作了研究班报告,他们来自中科院、
中物院、北京师范大学、北京交通大学和南京理工大学等院校的同行们。研讨班采用四位海
外主讲教师的详细介绍和国内同行的简短报告相结合的形式,提出问题,了解最新研究手段,
通过讨论达到解决相关问题的目的。
6月23日上午,在北京应用物理与计算数学研究所会议中心举行了本次研究班的开班仪式,
出席本次研究班开班仪式的有北京应用物理与计算数学研究所副所长江松研究员,以及来自
国内外相关科研人员70多人。北京国际计算物理中心办公室主任蔚喜军研究员主持了本次
研究班的开班仪式。在开班仪式上,江松副所长代表北京应用物理与计算数学研究所致
欢迎词,吴国宝教授代表本次研究班的主讲教师发言,希望通过本次研究班能够带动国
内计算物理科研人员在理论和应用偏微分方程及图像处理方面得到深入发展。
简短的开班仪式后,研究班开始进行学术报告和讨论。本次研究班的正式学员是58人,
包括北京应用物理与计算数学研究所13人,加上旁听报告会的科研人员每天大约有70多
人参加研究班。本次研究班学术报告共有20个。四位主讲老师每人半天(上午9:00-12:00)
的讲解,下午主持大约两个小时的讨论;国内同行的报告均安排在下午,大家以提出问题
或介绍自己的研究成果为主。
香港浸会大学吴国宝教授介绍了基于TV模型的图像去噪去模糊问题快速数值算法;
周好民教授介绍了小波变换的基本思想和理论及其在图像压缩和修补等方面的应用;
台雪城教授介绍了水平集方法及他们小组的最新研究结果;施石鹏程教授介绍了各种
医学图像的不同处理方法,还谈到了他做应用问题的体会。这四位老师的报告互不重
复,各有自己的侧重点,包括了数值方法研究、理论分析和具体应用问题的解决等。
他们的讲解均能做到深入浅出,覆盖了基础知识和前沿的问题及成果,引起了参会者
的浓厚兴趣。每天上午的讲解均到12:00结束,有的老师还讲到了12:15,下午一直讨
论到6:00,学生们还问题不断,组织者不得不提醒大家用餐时间已到。
参加研究班的学员普遍认为,本次研究班举办的非常好,能够邀请到世界上图像处
理方面优秀教授来做演讲,并进行热烈的讨论,使得学员受益匪浅。特别是下午的
讨论,主讲教师认真回答和解释学员的问题和他们研究过程中遇到的一些困难,获
得进一步深入研究的信息,对学员今后的研究工作具有极大的帮助。研讨班不仅使
许多学员受益匪浅,对我所闪光照相组的工作也有很大的推动作用。例如,吴国宝
教授的图像复原快速数值方法可以与闪光照相中的实际问题结合并加以应用,
相关人员已与他进行了详细讨论,确定了合作研究问题。北京信息科技大学邱均教授
的报告“图像重建迭代方法中对称性结构的应用”引起了许多人的兴趣。他介绍了
工业CT重建问题及其算法研究,对我所闪光照相中密度重建工作是一个很好的借鉴。
总之,这次研讨班给国内外图像处理方面的研究人员提供了一个很好的认识、交流平
台,为以后进一步的合作与学术交流打下了基础。
研讨班历时5天,于2007年6月27日圆满结束。研讨班得到了海内外各方人士的关注与好评。
