SIAM PolyU Student Chapter in the Second International Conference on Engineering and Computational Mathematics 2013

“It’s our great honor to serve such an exciting event. It provides us a good opportunity to communicate with academic scholars from around the world”, said one of voluntary student helpers in the Second International Conference on Engineering and Computational Mathematics (ECM2013)  held on December 16-18 2013 in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).  The conference was in cooperation with SIAM, which attracted over 300 participants from 21 countries. All student helpers are from SIAM PolyU Student Chapter.

With support from the Department of Applied Mathematics, PolyU, the SIAM PolyU Student Chapter was officially founded on July 5th, 2013. This newly-established student organization so far consists of 20 members all from postgraduate students from PolyU, of which 1 president, 1 vice president, 1 treasurer and 1 secretary were elected (http://www.polyu.edu.hk/~ama/SIAMChapter).  We successfully organized our first activity as student helpers for the conference ECM 2013. Our service obtained high praise and recognition of participants and organizers of the conference.  All participants congratulated the chapter on its establishment and thanked our contribution to ECM 2013 in the banquet of the conference. We are honored to take a picture in the banquet with Tim Kelley (the Chair of SIAM 2013 Board of trustees), Timothy W. Tong (President of PolyU), Tony Chan (President of Hong Kong University of Sciences and Technology), Sven Leyffer (Vice President of SIAM), Kwok-yin Wong (Dean of Faculty of Science and Textile, PolyU) and  Xiaojun Chen (Head of Department of Applied Mathematics, PolyU).

In the following period, a series of activities will be organized to enhance members’ understanding and capacity of mathematical applications in real settings, including several reports given by distinguished scholars from science and engineering departments, seminars with graduates from other universities and a field trip to financial or IT companies.
