Invitation Tournament of Universities from Hong Kong, Macau,
Taiwan and the Chinese Mainland

The
soccer fever generated by "World Cup 2002" spread
over the PolyU campus, with its Soccer Invitation Tournament
involving seven universities from the mainland, Taiwan and
Macau held from 2 to 6 July.
The
event, organised by SAO, was one of the 65th Anniversary
celebration activities, was "kicked" off by The
Hon. Mrs Rita Fan, President of the Legislative Council,
Mr Lam Tai-fai, the tournament's organising committee chairman,
and PolyU Deputy President Mr Alexander Tzang.
The
PolyU soccer team took on severe challenges posed from Zhongshan
University, Sichuan University, Donghua University, Zhejiang
University, Tsinghua University, Yunlin University of Science
and Technology, and Macau University.
Cheers
erupted at the Joint School Sports Centre on the first day
of tournament when PolyU team beat the Macau team by 3-0.
After rounds of contests, the University fell short of gaining
a berth in the semi-final. The Sichuan University powered
a 4-3 victory over Zhejiang University in the final.

The
closing and award presentation ceremony was officiated by
Mr Zhao Guang Ting, Director General of Publicity, Culture
and Sports Department, The Honourable Timothy Fok, President
of Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, PolyU
President Prof. Poon Chung-kwong and Mr Lam.
Mr
Zhou Wei of Sichuan University was the happiest player with
a triple honour. His brilliant performance brought him the
awards of Best Player, Best Goalscorer and Best Offensive
Player in the tournament. The Best Sportsmanship award went
to PolyU.
The
champion Sichuan University holds the gold cup with pride.
