leaders gather at Anniversary Dinner
More
than 2,000 friends and members of PolyU community
attended the 65th Anniversary Dinner held at the Hong
Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, signifying
yet another climax of the series of celebratory activities
spanned across the year.

The
Guest of Honour for the event was Dr Donald Tsang
Yam-kuen, Chief Secretary for Administration of the
HKSAR and a PolyU honorary graduate. Former Council
Chairmen of the then Hong Kong Polytechnic Sir Sze-yuen
Chung and Dr Allen Lee Peng-fei; former Principal
of the Hong Kong Technical College Mr Sung Sing-zak;
PolyU Council Chairman Dr Sir Gordon Wu Ying-sheung;
PolyU Court Chairman Dr Tung Chee-chen; and PolyU
President Prof. Poon Chung-kwong were on hand to receive
the guests.
In
addition to the many distinguished guests from both
the public and private sectors, the dinner was also
graced by the presence of senior government officials
and honorary doctorates of the University. They included
Mr Frederick Ma Si-hang, Secretary for Financial Services
and the Treasury; Dr Alice Lam, Chairman of the University
Grants Committee; Mrs Fanny Law, Permanent Secretary
for Education and Manpower; Dr Rosanna Wong Yick-ming,
Chairman of the Education Commission; and Dr Leung
Chun-ying, PolyU distinguished alumnus and Member
of the SAR's Executive Council.

A
giant "longevity bun" was cut to kick
off the evening. |
During
the dinner, a 10-feet-tall giant "longevity bun"
was cut to celebrate the University's anniversary.
Graduates of different eras also shared with the audience
the memorable moments of their study at the Institution.
They included: Mr Ng Wing-hong, Mr Wong Gin-wai and
Mr Yau Hon-kwong, alumni among the first cohort of
graduates sent forth by the then Government Trade
School in 1939; graduates of the Hong Kong Technical
College Dr Ng Tat-lun, Mr Ng Sai-ho and Dr Chris Wong;
graduates of the Hong Kong Polytechnic, including
renowned fashion designer Miss Vivienne Tam and famous
DJ Mr Cuson Law Kai-sun; as well as PolyU graduates
Mr Johnny Ng and Miss Anita Peng. They recollected
and told their campus stories reflecting the four
stages of development of the Institution, and the
stories were full of fun and joy.

Another
highlight of the evening was an exciting charity auction
hosted by Mrs Harriet Tung, wife of Mr Tung Chee-chen
and Honorary Advisor of 65th anniversary dinner; and
Dr Leung Chun-ying. All proceeds raised from this
gala event would go to the University's Student Development
Fund for supporting future projects and activities
focusing on student development.
Famous
songwriter Mr James Wong, at the invitation of PolyU,
earlier on composed a new song "Ode to PolyU"
to commemorate this special occasion. With lyrics
written by Mr Alexander Tzang Hing-chung, Deputy President
of PolyU, the song was debuted and sung by PolyU Student
Union Choir and Staff Choir during the event.
