Jun-Wei Luo is a director of the Key Laboratory of Semiconductor Physics and Chip Technologies, Institute of Semiconductors, CAS. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the Zhejiang University in 2000 and 2003, respectively, and Ph.D in condensed matter physics from the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. He associated the U.S. national renewable energy laboratory (NREL) as postdoc, scientist, and senior scientist from 2007 to 2014. He focuses mainly on semiconductor physics of Silicon-based devices for post-Moore’s law technologies, and made scientific contributions including discovering hidden spin polarization in inversion-symmetric bulk crystals, which opens the door to many hidden physics, discovering k-dependent spin-splitting in centrocymmetric antiferromagnets, which is now widely recognized as altermagnetism (Science’s 2024 Breakthrough of the Year), discovering strong linear Rashba effect of holes in one-dimensional semiconductor quantum wires and two-dimensional quantum wells, and proposed softening of the optical phonon by reduced interatomic bonding strength without depolarization. He has published more than 120 papers, including Nature (1), Nature Physics (1), Nature Nanotechnology (1), and PRL (7) as the first or corresponding author. He was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2019, and served as co-chairs of the ICTMC22 and ICDS32, two long-standing international conferences on semiconductors.
