This includes creating picker-friendly neighborhoods, exploring legal parking solutions, and fostering local government partnerships. The project, initially focused on the North District, has now expanded to include Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai. Our evaluation will focus on how these changes impact the social exclusion and self-concept of the pickers, highlighting the key effects of the new initiatives.

Project title: Mapping Adolescent Smoking Trajectories in China: A Social Practice Perspective on Behavioural Transition
Project period: 1 September 2025 – 31 August 2027
Funding amount: HK$841,040
Funding scheme: PolyU Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme
Project summary: Adolescent smoking remains a critical global public health challenge, with China representing a particularly concerning scenario. This research seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of smoking behaviours among Chinese adolescents, with particular emphasis on the transition from initial experimentation to habitual smoking. Utilising a life-course qualitative approach grounded in social practice theory, the study will explore how smoking behaviours mature throughout adolescence. Theoretically, this research will enhance our understanding of adolescent smoking by integrating the initiation and persistence of smoking into a cohesive interpretive framework, with a focus on the dynamic, temporal processes involved. Practically, the study’s findings can inform public health interventions and policy initiatives aimed at curbing smoking among Chinese youth. By addressing the complex socio-cultural and psychological factors that drive the development of smoking behaviours, this research has the potential to inspire more effective strategies for preventing and reducing adolescent smoking in China.
