The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today (30 January 2018) conferred the title of University Fellowship on seven outstanding individuals in recognition of their significant contributions to the University and community.
Presided over by Mr Chan Tze-ching, Chairman of the University Council, the conferment ceremony was held at the Jockey Club Auditorium on PolyU campus. The recipients were warmly greeted by PolyU President, Professor Timothy W. Tong and other senior staff members of the University. The fellowship recipients are (in alphabetical order of last name):
Professor John CHAI Yat-chiu, JP Professor John Chai Yat-chiu, Managing Director of Fook Tin Group Holdings Limited, is a distinguished scholar and dental specialist. Having a close affinity with PolyU, Professor Chai was a member of University Council and Chairman of its Knowledge Transfer Committee. He is currently Honorary Professor as well as the Chairman of Departmental Advisory Committee of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Professor Chai is keen to take up public duties covering higher education, innovation and technology, environmental protection and sustainable development of Hong Kong.

Mr CHUNG Po-yang, SBS, OBE, JP Mr Chung Po-yang, more widely known as Po Chung, is an accomplished entrepreneur and keen educator. He founded DHL International Limited in 1972 and is now Chairman Emeritus of DHL Express (Hong Kong) Limited. Since his retirement, Mr Chung has devoted his time and energy to promoting liberal arts education at local universities. Mr Chung has been the key contributor to PolyU’s development of Service Leadership curriculum and to the establishment of the Endowed Professorship in Service Leadership Education.

Mr LANG Lang Mr Lang Lang, an internationally renowned pianist, educator and philanthropist, has won numerous awards and accolades around the world over the years. Not only is he an influential ambassador who is leading the way in bringing classical music into the 21st century, but also a global leader who is devoted to music education and nurturing young talents. In 2013, Mr Lang was designated by the Secretary General of the United Nations as a Messenger of Peace focusing on global education.

Mrs Stella LAU Kun Lai-kuen, SBS, JP Mrs Stella Lau Kun Lai-kuen, Headmistress of Diocesan Girls’ School (DGS), is widely known and well respected as a veteran educator. Mrs Lau is also an inspiring figure to students with her commitment to a wide range of public duties and contributions to society beyond education. Mrs Lau was appointed the Justice of the Peace in 2006 and was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government in 2017 in recognition of her contributions to the community.

Ms NG Yuet-lau Ms Ng Yuet-lau, a renowned painter who belongs in the third generation of the Lingnan lineage, is totally committed to promoting Lingnan art education. With solo exhibitions held at prestigious venues worldwide and artworks widely collected by museums, art galleries and individual collectors, Ms Ng has gained universal acclaim for her art achievements and contributions. Ms Ng holds teaching positions at a number of universities. She was the Artist-in-Residence at PolyU in 2016/2017 and her works were displayed on campus at various occasions.

Dr Henry TAN, BBS, JP, LHD Dr Henry Tan is Chief Executive Officer of Luen Thai International Group. He is a successful business leader and advisor and he is devoted to nurturing fresh talents for the apparel and textile industry. Dr Tan is Court Member of PolyU, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of PolyU College of Professional and Continuing Education, and former Advisory Committee Member of the University’s Institute of Textiles and Clothing. Dr Tan has recently been elected as a Hong Kong Deputy to the 13th National People’s Congress.

Mr YAU Kwok-fai Mr Yau Kwok-fai, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Vantage International (Holdings) Limited, is a distinguished engineer who has contributed greatly to the Hong Kong community, especially in his field of construction engineering. Mr Yau is a graduate of the then Hong Kong Polytechnic and he is concerned with honouring his alma mater. He helped in the establishment of the Endowed Professorship in Sustainable Structures and Materials in 2015 and set up another Endowed Professorship in support of PolyU’s research in smart structures in 2017.

Since its introduction in 2000, PolyU has conferred University Fellowship on a total of 111 distinguished persons.
