CEE Departmental Visit- CCC Kei Long College (31 Oct)

24 students from CCC Kei Long College visited CEE department on 31 Oct 2022 (Mon). Dr Tony Sze, Associate Professor, introduced the admission information of BEng(Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development. A laboratory visit to Structural Engineering Research Laboratory and Water & Waste Research Laboratory were also arranged to them. All students found the visit fruitful and enjoyable.

CEE Departmental Visit - United Christian College (Kowloon East) (27 Oct)

25 students from United Christian College (Kowloon East) visited CEE department on 27 Oct 2022 (Thurs). Dr Andy Leung, Associate Head (Partnership), shared the recent development of civil engineering which helped students to gain better understanding of the field. Apart from the programme talk, students also visited Structural Engineering Research Laboratory and Water & Waste Research Laboratory.

New joiner - Dr Zhang Qi

Dr Qi ZHANG obtained his BEng. degree from Tongji University in 2016 and his Ph.D. degree from Stanford University in 2021. Before joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, he worked as a RGC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at PolyU from 2021 to 2022. He specializes in computational geomechanics of double porosity and transverse isotropy. His ongoing research includes THM processes in methane hydrate-bearing formations, fractured shale reservoirs, and finite-strain elastoplasticity in geomaterials. Dr ZHANG joined us on 1 Nov 2022.

28 CEE scholars have been listed among the top 2% scientists released by Stanford University. This ranking demonstrates their publication are most frequently cited by other authors globally.   The report was prepared by a team of experts led by Prof. John Ioannidis of Stanford University. According to the team, the publicly available database provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). 9 CEE research projects awarded NSFC Young Scientist Fund (YSF) 2022

In 2022, the NSFC Young Scientist Fund (YSF) was firstly opened for application to offer support to young academics and encourage them to focus on self-chosen area for innovative research. Selected researchers will receive a maximum funding of RMB300,000 to support their research projects for three years.   9 CEE research projects were awarded the YSF with a total sum of RMB2,700,000. Dr Tak-Ming Chan Elected as Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers

Congratulations to Dr Tak-Ming Chan, Associate Professor of CEE, who had been elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers (FIStructE). The institution is the world’s largest membership organization dedicated to structural engineering.   Being recognised as the FIStructE grade, Dr Chan makes outstanding contributions to structural engineering, demonstrates exceptional commitment and energises education through his leadership.

Congratulations to SELVARAJ Sivaganesh, postdoctoral fellow under the guidance of Dr Tak-Ming Chan and Prof. Ben Young, who is selected to receive the 2023 Yoon Duk Kim Young Researcher Award from Structural Stability Research Council, American Institute of Steel Construction.   This Yoon Duk Kim Award recognises students or early career professionals who have made a noteworthy contribution to the advancement of structural stability.
