Three CEE Projects Awarded RGC Collaborative Research Fund (CRF)

In 2022/23 CRF Exercise, the RGC received a total of 258 preliminary proposals and shortlisted 93 submission of full proposals, of which 50 were selected for interview. Finally, 40 CRF proposals [i.e. 7 Collaborative Research Equipment Grant (CREG) and 33 Collaborative Research Project Grant (CRPG) proposals] with a total amount of $237.5 million (exclusive of on-costs) were supported by the RGC. Congratulations to Dr Alessandro Stocchino, Prof. Jian-Guo Dai and Prof. Xiangdong Li, whose projects were supported by RGC among the 54 proposals submitted by PolyU. Dr Huan-Feng Duan’s Project Awarded CRF Young Collaborative Research Grant (YCRG) 2022/23

The RGC announced the funding results of the CRF Young Collaborative Research Grant (YCRG) in 2022/23 Exercise on 5 January 2023. Congratulations to Dr Huan-Feng Duan, whose project was selected for interview and supported by the RGC among the 5 full applications submitted by PolyU.   In the first round of CRF Young Collaborative Research Grant 2022/23, the RGC received 34 full applications, 16 proposals were selected for interview.  Finally, 14 proposals were supported at a total amount of $52.5 million (exclusive of on-costs).   Details of Dr Duan’s project is listed below: Ref. PolyU Info Day for Taught Postgraduate Programmes

The PolyU Info Day for Taught Postgraduate Programmes was successfully held on 7 Jan 2023 (Sat). Dr Tak-Ming Chan (Programme Leader of MSc in Civil Engineering) and Dr Yi Jiang (Deputy Programme Leader of MSc in Environmental Management and Engineering) delivered a programme talk to introduce the programme details and admission information of MSc in Civil Engineering and MSc in Environmental Management and Engineering respectively. Participants were also able to ask questions during the Q&A session. The application deadline is 30 April 2023. Green Tech Fund Awarded “Low-carbon Transformation of Construction Materials Using Waste Glass” Project

Congratulations to Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, whose project, titled “Low-carbon Transformation of Construction Materials Using Waste Glass”, has been awarded HK$5.29 million Green Tech Fund (GTF). The Green Tech Fund (GTF) was established in 2020 to provide better and more focused funding support to research and development projects which can help Hong Kong decarbonize and enhance environmental protection. The GTF has so far approved 22 projects among 100 applications.

CEE has been exploring collaboration opportunities with different international institutions. Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, had a meeting with Dr Mariyana Aida Ab. Kadir, senior lecturer of Department of Structure and Materials, University of Technology Malaysia, to discuss the partnership possibilities between the two universities.

CEE Departmental Visit-Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School (23 Dec)

30 students from Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School visited CEE department on 23 Dec 2022 (Fri). Dr Siwei Liu, Assistant Professor, delivered a programme talk to share the latest development of the civil engineering industry and introduced the admission information of BEng(Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development. Students then formed groups to compete in the “Tower Challenge: Engineering with Straws, Tape and Imagination”. The best performed group built a tower of 61cm high. Apart from the programme talk and interactive workshop, students also visited Noise and Safety Laboratory and Geology Laboratory.

Appointment as a Member of Advisory Council on the Environment (ACE)

Prof. Dan Tsang has been appointed as a member of the Advisory Council on the Environment (ACE). The Council plays a pivotal role in reviewing the state of the environment in Hong Kong, as well as advising the Government, through the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, on appropriate measures which might be taken to combat pollution of all kinds, and to protect and sustain the environment Prof. Tsang also serves in Environmental Impact Assessment Subcommittee and Waste Management Subcommittee to support the development of environmental protection and conservation policies in Hong Kong.

Dr Tak-Ming Chan's Project Awarded RGC Research Impact Fund 2022/23

The RGC announced the results of the Research Impact Fund (RIF) 2022/23. As the project coordinator, Dr Tak-Ming CHAN receives HK$9.75 million research funding from RIF for the research project entitled “Achieving the Circular Economy in Construction through Deconstruction and Reuse Technologies for Steel and Composite Structures”. In 2022/23 Exercise, the RGC received 127 preliminary proposals, in which 13 full proposals are supported after rounds of selection and interview. This project secures the largest funding in this round of exercise.

New joiner - Dr Kaiming Bi

Dr Kaiming Bi joins The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an Associate Professor (Presidential Young Scholar Scheme) in January 2023. Before joining PolyU, he was an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and Associate Professor in the Centre for Infrastructure Monitoring and Protection at Curtin University, Australia. Dr Bi's research interests mainly include Structural Vibration Control, Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. He has generated more than 130 peer-reviewed papers in the well-known international journals. His research papers have attracted more than 4000 citations in Google Scholar with an H-index of 34. He is one of the Stanford’s World’s Top 2% Scientists (single year, since 2020). Dr Bi has won quite a few highly competitive research grants from ARC, including the prestigious Future Fellowship and Discovery Early Career Award. He received the JM Ko Medal from Advances in Structural Engineering-An International Journal in 2016, he was one of the finalists of the prestigious Western Australia Premier’s Science Awards Early Career Scientist of the Year in 2016, he also received the High Achieving Young Investigator Award from the University of Western Australia in 2012. He is an Associate Editor of the top structural engineering journal Engineering Structures. Dr Bi has joined us on 3 Jan 2023.

Ir Kwan Obtained CoPLA Paper Award 2022

Congratulations to Ir Kwan Chung-lim, Senior Teaching Fellow, for receiving the Community of Practice on Conducting Learning Analytics to Inform Teaching and Learning (CoPLA) Paper Award 2022. With the good use of learning analytics in enhancing learning and teaching, Ir Kwan’s paper entitled “Tracking At-Risk Student Groups from Teaching and Learning Activities in Engineering Education” was selected by the Panel for the Second Prize among eight shortlisted presentations.
