CEE Student Won in Young Persons’ Lecture Competition (Hong Kong Heat) 2022

Congratulations to Mr LI Danning (PhD candidate, CEE, supervised by Dr LENG Zhen) for winning the 1st place in the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) Young Persons’ Lecture Competition (Hong Kong Heat) 2022 with his topic “Investigation on the Aging Mechanism of Asphalt Rubber Binder Prepared with Waste Tire Rubber”. Mr LI will then represent IOM3 Hong Kong Branch to attend the Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition Final in late 2022.

JSCE International Outstanding Collaboration Award

Congratulations to Prof. Dai Jian-Guo for receiving the FY2021 JSCE International Outstanding Collaboration Award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.   This award recognizes the awardees’ continuous efforts and significant contribution to the development of concrete science and technology, the leadership and achievements in fostering the relationship among civil engineering researchers, as well as the commitment to strengthening the friendship between Japan and China through technical and cultural exchanges.

Dr Goman Ho Received PolyU Graduate School Outstanding Research Postgraduate Alumni Award

Congratulations to Dr HO Wai-ming Goman for receiving the PolyU Graduate School Outstanding Research Postgraduate Alumni Award! Dr Ho has been a CEE alumnus since 1984 and rejoined to obtain a PhD degree in 1992.  Being a world-renowned expert in tall building design, Dr Ho was involved in many of the most challenging and innovative skyscrapers construction projects in Asia, including the 283m tall Cheung Kong Center in Hong Kong and the 528m tall CITIC Tower in Beijing. He is also the first Chinese Structural Engineer who is awarded the Arup Fellow worldwide.  The award recognises Dr Ho’s distinctive accomplishments and impactful contributions in the profession and industry.   More details: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/gs/news-and-events/outstanding-rpg-alumni-award/.

New joiner - Dr He Tangtian

Dr He Tangtian obtained his M.Phil. degree (2011) in Marine Biology from Shantou University and got his Ph.D. degree (2017) in Environmental Science from City University of Hong Kong. Before joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, Dr He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at PolyU from 2018 to 2022. Dr He has been working actively in the inter-disciplinary research fields between environmental biogeochemistry, toxicology, and microbiology. His ongoing research includes natural and anthropogenic origins of antimicrobial resistance, airborne transmission of antimicrobial resistance and pathogens, phage-host interaction on antimicrobial resistance and human health, marine pollution and coral reef degradation, and ocean-air interface and polluted marine aerosols. Dr He has joined us on 4 July 2022.

New joiner - Dr Liang Weijian

Dr Liang Weijian obtained his B.Eng. (Hons) in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) in 2016 and earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2020. During his Ph.D. study, he finished a half-year research exchange at UC Berkeley. Prior to joining PolyU, he was a postdoc fellow at Prof. Zhao Jidong ’s Lab in HKUST. Dr Liang’s current research interest focuses on developing high-performance multi-scale and multi-physics approaches for modeling granular material. Dr Liang has joined us on 4 July 2022.

New joiner - Dr Wang Fei

Dr Wang Fei received his B.S. in Applied Physics from Southeast University (2009), M.S. in Civil Engineering from Tongji University (2012), and Ph.D. in Water and Environmental Engineering from the University of Hong Kong (2020). Before joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, Dr Wang worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at HKU. His current research interests include physics-informed reduced-order modeling, bluff-body wake flow control, fluid-structure interaction, and flow-driven rapid removal of air pollutants. Dr Wang has joined us on 4 July 2022.

New joiner - Dr Wang Cunteng

Dr Wang Cunteng received his BEng., MEng., and PhD degrees from Zhengzhou University in 2014, Harbin Institute of Technology in 2017, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2020, respectively. He then worked as a Research Associate at The University of Hong Kong from 2020 to 2022. Dr Wang’s research focuses on the bioaerosol/aerosol behavior and its role in disease transmission (i.e., Covid-19) in indoor environments. Dr Wang has rich experience in aerosol characterization, dispersion, deposition, and resuspension. His research has been invited for a lecture by American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) and was highlighted as a cover page in Journal of Aerosol Science. In HKU team, they have collaborated with Prince Philip Dental Hospital (PPDH) to develop control measures in order to curb SARS-CoV-2 virus spread in dental hospital. Dr Wang has joined us on 4 July 2022.

New joiner - Dr Sun Xiaohao

Dr Xiaohao Sun obtained his B.S. in 2015 and Ph.D. degree in 2019 from Southeast University, China. Dr Sun was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and then a Research Assistant Professor at Southeast University from 2019 to 2021. Before joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, Dr Sun worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at PolyU from 2021 to 2022. Dr Sun’s main research interests include: 1. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) for concrete crack repair, 2. Bio-cementation for dust and sandstorm control, 3. Data-driven models in civil engineering, and 4. Bio-mineralization. Dr Sun has joined us on 4 July 2022.

Dr TM Chan Received Nishino Prize 2022

Dr Chan Tak-ming, Associate Professor, received the Nishino Prize 2022, which is given at the 17th East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering & Construction (EASEC) held in Singapore on 27-30 June 2022. The prize is given to two young engineers (age below 45 years) from the Asia-Pacific region at each conference who has made significant contributions and shown potential for great future achievements in the area of structural engineering and construction through research, development and/or practice. Dr Chan has made significant research contributions to tubular structures, steel structures, steel concrete composite structures and steel design codes. His research achievements have been recognized by numbers awards from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers.
