Dr Tak-Ming Chan's Project Awarded RGC Research Impact Fund 2022/23

The RGC announced the results of the Research Impact Fund (RIF) 2022/23. As the project coordinator, Dr Tak-Ming CHAN receives HK$9.75 million research funding from RIF for the research project entitled “Achieving the Circular Economy in Construction through Deconstruction and Reuse Technologies for Steel and Composite Structures”. In 2022/23 Exercise, the RGC received 127 preliminary proposals, in which 13 full proposals are supported after rounds of selection and interview. This project secures the largest funding in this round of exercise.  

New joiner - Dr Kaiming Bi

Dr Kaiming Bi joins The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an Associate Professor (Presidential Young Scholar Scheme) in January 2023. Before joining PolyU, he was an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and Associate Professor in the Centre for Infrastructure Monitoring and Protection at Curtin University, Australia. Dr Bi's research interests mainly include Structural Vibration Control, Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. He has generated more than 130 peer-reviewed papers in the well-known international journals. His research papers have attracted more than 4000 citations in Google Scholar with an H-index of 34. He is one of the Stanford’s World’s Top 2% Scientists (single year, since 2020). Dr Bi has won quite a few highly competitive research grants from ARC, including the prestigious Future Fellowship and Discovery Early Career Award. He received the JM Ko Medal from Advances in Structural Engineering-An International Journal in 2016, he was one of the finalists of the prestigious Western Australia Premier’s Science Awards Early Career Scientist of the Year in 2016, he also received the High Achieving Young Investigator Award from the University of Western Australia in 2012. He is an Associate Editor of the top structural engineering journal Engineering Structures. Dr Bi has joined us on 3 Jan 2023.  

Ir Kwan Obtained CoPLA Paper Award 2022

Congratulations to Ir Kwan Chung-lim, Senior Teaching Fellow, for receiving the Community of Practice on Conducting Learning Analytics to Inform Teaching and Learning (CoPLA) Paper Award 2022. With the good use of learning analytics in enhancing learning and teaching, Ir Kwan’s paper entitled “Tracking At-Risk Student Groups from Teaching and Learning Activities in Engineering Education” was selected by the Panel for the Second Prize among eight shortlisted presentations.

CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary Kick-off Tree Planting Ceremony

The year 2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) (formerly the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering (CSE)). As a prelude to celebrate the Department’s golden jubilee, a Tree Planting Ceremony was successfully held on 19 December 2022. We have the honour to have invited (former) Heads of Department, Faculty Dean and special guests as our officiating party, including Ir Prof. Fred Ng Sai-ho, Former Acting Head of CSE; Ir Prof. Jan-ming Ko, Ir Prof. Yok-sheung Li, Ir Prof. You-lin Xu, Former Heads of CSE; Ir Prof. William Hing-Keung Lam, Former Head of CEE; Ir Prof. Xiangdong Li, Dean of FCE; Ir Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE; Ir Yau Kwok Fai, President of FHKPUAA; and Ir Edmond Wong Hon Ping, President of CEEAA. Over 40 retirees, staff members, alumni and students participated in this meaningful event to share the joy together. During the opening remarks, Prof. Poon addressed the theme of CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary: To Reconnect and Create Bonding between CEE, Alumni and Friends.  He also highlighted the milestones of CEE/CSE and shared his aspiration of CEE’s future development with participants. Dracaena Fragrans (太陽神), which symbolizes passion, longevity and perseverance, was planted during the ceremony. We wish all CEE/CSE students and graduates a prosperous future and fruitful life!

PolyU CEE Webinar Series: Upcycling of Sewage Sludge Ash into Foaming Warm Mix Asphalt Additive for Sustainable Asphalt Pavement Construction

Dr Leng Zhen delivered a seminar with the topic of “Upcycling of Sewage Sludge Ash into Foaming Warm Mix Asphalt Additive for Sustainable Asphalt Pavement Construction” on 7 December 2022. It was co-organized with HKIE Civil Division.

CEE academics presented major research findings at a RGC Public Symposium

On 11 Dec 2022, Prof. Tao Wang reported the findings of a Theme-based research project at a public symposium organized by RGC and The University of Hong Kong. The project team also showcased the results in posters and video slips.

OSH Seminar: Professional Safety Auditors – Registration and Legal Roles   To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CEE, “OSH Seminar: Professional Safety Auditors – Registration and Legal Roles” was successfully held on 9 Dec 2022 (Fri). We are honored to have Mr LAU Sui-kee &  Mr WONG Yik, Eddie (Representatives of the  Labour Department, HKSARG) to be the speakers. In the seminar, they introduced the registration process and legal roles of a Safety Auditor. They also shared some case studies regarding occupational safety and health performance of different industries.   There will be a series of academic events and exciting celebration activities for the golden jubilee.
