CEE Entry Scholarship for Taught Postgraduate/Research Postgraduate Programmes

A brand new CEE Entry Scholarship for Taught Postgraduate/Research Postgraduate Programmes will be offered with effect from 2022/23 intake.    For Taught Postgraduate Programmes (both full-time and part-time): Full tuition fee waiver Half tuition waiver   For Research Postgraduates Programme: HK$80,000 (3-year PhD) HK$100,000 (4-year PhD)   Priority will be given to graduates of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) of PolyU in recent 3 years with outstanding academic performance. The scholarship will be disbursed by installments and the continuation is subject to satisfactory academic result.  No application is required.  Awardees will be informed of the results individually.  Details: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/cee/.

Prof. Anthony Chen won the “AED60 Best Paper Award” from the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies

Congratulations to Prof. Anthony Chen for winning the “Best Paper Award” given by the AED60 Standing Committee on Statistical Method of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, Washington, DC, USA, at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 101st Annual Meeting on 9-13 January 2022.

Three PhD Students Won HKSTAM Best Student Presentation Award 2022

Congratulations to three PhD students, Zeyu WANG, Gengfu HE, and Chang HE, for obtaining the “Best Student Presentation Award” during the 25th Annual Conference of HKSTAM 2022 and the 17th Jiangsu – Hong Kong Forum on Mechanics and Its Application held on 23 April 2022. They are supervised by Dr Zhen-Yu YIN, Associate Professor. Chang HE is also co-supervised by Dr Alessandro Stocchino, Associate Professor.

New joiner - Prof. Zhao Xiao Lin

CEE welcomes Prof. Zhao Xiao Lin to the post of Chair Professor of Civil Infrastructure on 21 April 2022. Prof. Zhao obtained his PhD degree in Civil Engineering and Doctor of Engineering (higher doctorate) degree from the University of Sydney (USYD), as well as an MBA (Executive) degree jointly awarded by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and USYD. Prior to joining PolyU, he was the Associate Dean (International) in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW. Before that, he held the Chair of Civil Engineering from 2001 to 2019 and the Head of Department of Civil Engineering from 2008 to 2011 at Monash University, Australia.       Prof. Zhao’s current research focuses on developing materials with high performance and sustainability in civil engineering applications and steel-concrete-FRP hybrid construction. He has published 9 books and 400 refereed SCI journal papers and supervised more than 50 PhD students. Prof. Zhao is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

New joiner - Dr Wang Yu

Dr Wang Yu obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Applied Chemistry from Sun Yat-sen University (2012), and got his Ph.D. degree (2019) in Environmental Engineering from PolyU. Before joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, Dr Wang worked as a joint Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Jinan University and PolyU from 2019 to 2021. Dr Wang’s main research interests include: 1. Characters and formation mechanisms of photochemical air pollution in urban, rural, oceanic, mountainous and forested areas; 2. Spatiotemporal variations, photochemical behaviors and long-term trend of air pollutants; 3. Chemical compositions of VOCs, source apportionment, chemical contribution to O3 formation; 4. Evaluation on observation-oriented O3 control strategies; 5. Improvement and application of gas phase chemical box model (i.e. PBM-MCM/CB05 and PTM-MCM); 6. Near-explicit numerical simulation of photochemistry and radical chemistry process. Dr Wang has joined us on 11 April 2022.

Editor’s Choice of Journal of Engineering Mechanics-American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

A paper from Dr Zhen-Yu Yin’s group was awarded the Editor’s Choice of Journal of Engineering Mechanics, which is one of the most classic journals in the American Society of Civil Engineers focusing on the field of engineering mechanics. The paper titled “Physics-Informed Multifidelity Residual Neural Networks for Hydromechanical Modeling of Granular Soils and Foundation Considering Internal Erosion” was authored by Mr Pin ZHANG (Ph.D candidate of CEE), Dr Zhen-Yu Yin (corresponding author), Dr Yin-Fu, Jin, Dr Jie Yang and Dr Brian Sheil.  The journal can be found at https://ascelibrary.org/journal/jenmdt.
