New joiner - Dr Michael C.W. Chan

Dr Michael CW Chan received his B.Eng. (Hons) degree in 2015 and Ph.D degree in 2020, both from the University of Wollongong, Australia. He then joined PolyU as a Postdoctoral Fellow from 2020 to 2022. Dr Chan’s research focus is on FRP composite, FRP-steel-concrete composite structures, non-linear finite element modelling and constitutive models for rubber concrete. During his Ph.D study, Dr Chan examined the structural behaviour of composite columns and developed theoretical models of various levels of complexity for different purposes, ranging from three-dimensional finite element models of novel composite columns to one-dimensional design-oriented models of concrete. His Ph.D dissertation was awarded the “Examiners’ Commendation for Outstanding Thesis”, and he was the sole awardee of 2020 in the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering. Dr Chan has joined us on 1 June 2022.

CEE Alumni Selected as One of the 2022 “Women in Sustainability Leadership”

Congratulations to Ms Grace Kwok, Chairman & Executive Director of Allied Sustainability and Environmental Consultants Group Limited, for being selected as one of the 2022 “Women in Sustainability Leadership” announced by the Women in Sustainability Leadership Awards Alumnae Group.  The award is granted to influential women trailblazers who have become a powerful force in the profession of creating a more sustainable world.   Grace obtained the BEng (Hons) Environmental Engineering in PolyU and has over 20 years' experiences in acoustics, environmental and sustainability consultancy.  She keeps close connection with CEE and contributes to the Department by serving in our Departmental Advisory Committee and providing different opportunities to our students.

Organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Structural Division, the Structural Excellence Award aims at promoting excellence in structural engineering through design and construction of buildings / infrastructures and research and application.    Congratulations to Prof. Zhu Songye, Professor, and Prof. Dai Jian-guo, Associate Head (Academic Development), for receiving the Grand Award and Commendation Merit of the HKIE Structural Excellence Award 2022. Dr Andy Leung, Associate Professor, introduced the BEng (Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development.  He also promoted the CEE Entry Scholarships for Outstanding HKDSE Students which will be offered to new entrants with excellent HKDSE results.

Prof. Jianhua Yin Ranked 4th Most Cited Author of Canadian Geotechnical Journal (in all years)

Congratulations to Prof. Jianhua Yin,  Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics, for being ranked the 4th most cited author of Canadian Geotechnical Journal (in all years). Canadian Geotechnical Journal is one of the three most traditional and top journals in geotechnical field in the world.

PolyU Faculty Seminar Series

The Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) session of the newly launched PolyU Faculty Seminar Series was held on 13 May 2022. After the introduction by Prof. Geoffrey Shen of Global Engagement Office and Prof. Xiang-dong Li, Dean of FCE, Ir Prof. Chi Sun Poon shared CEE’s achievements, the scheme-based admission details and the salient features of our programmes. The sharing enabled participants to have a better understanding of CEE, prepare their academic goals, and eventually better equipped for their studies and career development. CEE Entry Scholarship for Taught Postgraduate/Research Postgraduate Programmes

A brand new CEE Entry Scholarship for Taught Postgraduate/Research Postgraduate Programmes will be offered with effect from 2022/23 intake.    For Taught Postgraduate Programmes (both full-time and part-time): Full tuition fee waiver Half tuition waiver   For Research Postgraduates Programme: HK$80,000 (3-year PhD) HK$100,000 (4-year PhD)   Priority will be given to graduates of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) of PolyU in recent 3 years with outstanding academic performance. The scholarship will be disbursed by installments and the continuation is subject to satisfactory academic result.  No application is required.  Awardees will be informed of the results individually.  Details: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/cee/.

Prof. Anthony Chen won the “AED60 Best Paper Award” from the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies
