PolyU Undergraduate Info Day 2021 - CEE

Thank you for joining CEE’s activities in PolyU Undergraduate Info Day 2021 on 10 Oct 2021 (Sun) after postponement and under typhoon.   During the info seminars, Dr Andy Leung, Deputy Programme Leader, introduced the programme, admission details and career prospects of the brand new BEng (Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development [JS3120]. Best Paper Award for Methodological Development at EASTS 2021

A paper titled “Travel Time Prediction on Links with and without Point Detectors on Urban Roads” was awarded the Best Paper Award for Methodological Development in the 14th International Conference of The Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS) on 12-14 September 2021 in Hiroshima, Japan (Online).  The paper is co-authored by Prof. William Hing-Keung Lam (Chair Professor of Civil and Transportation Engineering of CEE), Dr Wei Ma (Assistant Professor of CEE), Dr Mei Lam Tam (Senior Research Fellow of CEE), Mr Ang Li (PhD Student of CEE) and Dr Renxin Zhong (Associate Professor, Sun Yat-Sen University)

Dr Hu Yifei_new joiner

New Joiner - Dr Hu Yifei

Dr Yifei Hu obtained a bachelor’s degree from Tongji University in 2012 and a master’s degree from PolyU in 2013. He worked as a graduate structural engineer for an international engineering consulting firm in Hong Kong from 2013 to 2014. After receiving a PhD degree from PolyU in 2019, Dr Hu joined Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch) as a Postdoctoral Fellow.   Dr Hu’s research focuses on high performance steel structures and cold-formed steel tubular structures. His specialties include non-linear finite element modelling of manufacturing processes, experimental and numerical investigations into cold-formed high strength steel tubular joints, practical structural design and connection design in steel modular buildings.   Dr Hu has joined us on 1 Sep 2021.

Dr Sumei Wang obtained BEng in Civil Engineering from Hebei University in 2013 and PhD in Civil Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2018. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at PolyU from 2019 to 2021. Dr Wang’s main research interests include structural health monitoring, structural dynamics and control, interaction of train-track-bridge system, dynamic analysis of high-speed railway and maglev, vision-based deep learning, and monitoring and control in rail engineering.    Dr Wang has joined us 1 Sep 2021.

New Joiner - Dr Wang Xiang

Dr Wang Xiang obtained a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Central South University (CSU) in 2014, a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2015, and a PhD degree in road and railway engineering from CSU in 2020. He was a visiting postgraduate in The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2018 and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in 2019. He was a postdoctoral fellow of the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering in PolyUbefore he became a research assistant professor in September 2021.   His research interests include the discrete element method, granular material, deep Learning, automation in construction, digital twin, etc. with a strong focus on the discrete modeling of arbitrarily irregular shaped granular materials, and the macroscopic and microscopic analysis of mechanical responses and topology evolution. He has published 20 SCI journal papers and served as a reviewer for several SCI journals, including Construction and Building Materials, Powder Technology, Advanced Powder Technology, Computers and Geotechnics, Particuology, Computational Particle Mechanics, etc.   Dr Wang has joined us on 1 Sep 2021.

CEE Orientation Programme 2021

The CEE Orientation Programme 2021 was held on 26 August (for local students) and 27 August (for non-local students) 2021. Ir Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, kicked off the event by introducing the programme development and departmental achievement.   It was followed by the sharing from the representatives of Student Affair Office, HKIE Student Chapter and 28th CEESS, which help students better prepare for their new start.   Students were also able to meet with their Programme Leader to learn more about the programme.   We sincerely welcome all freshmen and wish you have an exciting university life ahead!

webCEE Alumni Appointed as Chair Professor in Structural Engineering at The University of Edinburgh

CEE Alumni Appointed as Chair in Structural Engineering at The University of Edinburgh, UK

Prof. Dilum Fernando obtained his PhD in PolyU under the supervision of Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President, and the advisory team of Prof. Tao Yu and Prof. Xiao-Ling Zhao. His PhD topic was to investigate the behaviour of FRP-to-steel bonded joints.  After graduation in 2010, Prof. Fernando joined Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), Switzerland as a postdoctoral fellow, and University of Queensland in 2013 as a lecturer. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019 and was appointed as the deputy director of the Centre for Future Timber Structures/Future Timber Hub, the leading timber research centre in Australia. In Jun 2021, Prof. Fernando joined the School of Engineering at The University of Edinburgh as the Chair in Structural Engineering. Prof. Fernando has collaborated with Prof. Teng and Prof. Yu of PolyU CEE for various research projects, which won several national and international awards including BERD-FEUP Prize for World Innovation in Bridge Engineering, Create Magazine’s Australia’s 30 Top Most Innovative Engineers Award, and UQ’s Excellence in Innovation 2019 Award.  Prof. Fernando intends to continue his research and further expand his industry translational research to better serve society. He is also dedicated to developing a world leading educational program to produce Structural Engineers, who are capable of designing structures using advanced materials and technologies to minimize resource consumption and CO2 emissions.
