Best Oral Presentation Award of CMA 2020

Dr H C Ho has made a presentation entitled “Determination of true stress strain characteristics of structural steels using Instantaneous Area Method” in the 2nd International Conference on Metals and Alloys (CMA 2020) in December 2020, which was well received by the Conference. Dr Ho was awarded the “Best Oral Presentation” in the area of innovation engineering application of metals and alloys by Prof. M. A. Wahab, Chairman of the CMA 2020.

Major research funding from NSFC awarded to Prof. Xiangdong Li

Prof. Xiangdong Li has recently been awarded RMB 15,000,000 from the NSFC Major Research Plan for a two-year (2021-2022) Integrated Project entitled “Joint toxicity mechanisms and contributions of key bioactive components in airborne fine particulate matters (PM2.5) from typical urban areas of China”.   In collaboration with the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tongji University, Prof. Li will employ advanced approaches from computational toxicology to machine learning, live cell imaging, multi-omics, and genome editing to answer what key toxic constituents and their mixtures are responsible for health effects of PM2.5, and, more importantly, to provide scientific evidence and technical support for precise mitigation of high-risk bioactive components that is essential for China’s strategies in the low-to-medium PM2.5 pollution scenario in the future.

New Patent Certificate issued by CNIPA

New Patent Certificate issued by CNIPA Congratulations to Prof. Yi-Qing Ni and two members of Hong Kong Branch of National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Center (CNERC-Rail), Dr Wang Su-mei and Mr Lu Yang. They have received a patent certificate issued by National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), PRC. The new patent is called Maglev Controlling System (磁悬浮控制系统).  More details of the patent can be found at http://epub.cnipa.gov.cn/certifdesc.action?strWhere=CN212289523U.

CIHT Student Paper Award 2020

Congratulations to our student, Ms Long Yee CHAN, for receiving Student Paper Award 2020 issued by The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Hong Kong Region. It recognizes the excellence of her final year project, “The Skid Resistance of Noise-Reducing Concrete Surface Texture Made of 3D Printing Technology”. She is also shortlisted for ICE HKA G&S Emerging Engineers Award 2020.

New Joiner - Dr Wang Youwu

Dr Wang Youwu– Research Assistant Professor   Dr Wang received his PhD degree in Structural Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2017. After graduation, he jointed the Hong Kong Branch of National Engineering Research Center on Rail Transit Electrification and Automation (CNERC-Rail) as research associate (9/2017 – 11/2017), postdoctoral fellow (12/2017 – 5/2020) and research fellow (6/2020 – 12/2020).   Dr Wang’s research focuses on the structural damage detection and safety assessment of civil infrastructure under the effects of structural deterioration, climate change and hazards to aid the development of the infrastructure systems. Recent applications emphasize on long-span bridges, high-rise buildings and high-speed rail. He participated in several research projects and consultancy projects as a co-investigator. In addition, he assisted in organizing two large-scale conferences (more than 650 attendees in total including 9 academicians) as a secretary-general of the conference.   Dr Wang has joined us on 4 January 2021.

New Joiner - Dr GUO Chuanrui

Dr. Guo, Chuanrui – Research Assistant Professor    Dr. Guo received his B.Eng. in Engineering Mechanics from Central South University, China (2010), M.Eng. in Civil Engineering from Central South University, China (2014), and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA (2019). Before joining PolyU, he was a postdoctoral research fellow and lab manager at SPAR Lab, Missouri University of Science and Technology (2019-2020).    Dr. Guo’s research interests include laser aided fiber grating, optic fiber sensor, two-dimensional nanomaterials synthesis and characterization, and novel applications of smart sensor and material in civil infrastructure.    Dr. Guo was selected Drs. Franklin & Pi-Yu Cheng Missouri S&T Teaching Scholar Award (2019) and National Scholarship by the Ministry of Education, China (2007).    Dr Guo has joined us on 4 January 2021.

Outstanding Alumni Award 2020

Congratulations to Ir LAU Chun-kit, Ricky, JP, in receiving the Outstanding Alumni Award 2020! The award is hosted by Department of CEE and co-sponsored by PolyU CEE Alumni Association, which aims to give public recognition to outstanding graduates of CEE for their accomplishments in their professions and their contributions to the community. Ir LAU is a graduate of BEng in Civil Engineering at PolyU in 1989 and is currently the Director of Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) of HKSAR Government. He has remarkable contribution to the community and his profession by leading his team in CEDD to strive for engineering excellence, in a bid to create a safe, green and sustainable environment for people to live in.

New Joiner - Dr Tong Haijie

Dr Tong Haijie - Research Assistant Professor   Dr Tong received his PhD degree in Physical Chemistry from Beijing Institute of Technology, China, in 2011. From 2009 to 2010, he studied in Bristol University as a Joint PhD student with the government scholarship of CSC. After graduation, he joined the Department of Chemistry at University of Cambridge as a PDRA (2012-2014). Then he moved to Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Germany as a research scientist (2014-2016) and team leader (2017-2020).   Dr Tong and co-workers have explored the multiphase chemistry of ambient particulate matter and laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosols, by using state-of-the-art instruments and kinetic models. Dr Tong has led/participated in several atmospheric field campaigns and laboratory measurement projects on radical chemistry and health effects of biogenic and anthropogenic particles. He has collaborated with various groups in the UK, US and Europe, and has 27 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He serves as reviewer for more than ten scientific journals in the atmospheric and aerosol research fields. Dr Tong has joined us on 21 December 2020.
