On 25 Oct 2024, Prof. Steven D. Glaser from University of California, Berkeley visited the CNERC-Rail at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and gave a talk on ‘Wireless in the Woods: the Internet of water’. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are proving their value for the study of detailed water availability Measuring networks, whether for run off in the cities or the amount of snow in the mountains, can provide dense data in time and space. Prof. Glaser has designed, built, and operated three of the largest WSNs in the world in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California at the upper reaches of the North Fork East, Branch of the Feather River, the American River and the Critical Zone Observatory This totaled about 100 sensor nodes, 1500 environmental sensors, covering a total of about 3000 km2 The talk introduced the use of WSNs in the forest. The novel hardware and computer enhanced methodologies to locate networks and sensors at a location were described. Prof. Glaser also discussed the solution of problems found working outside and introduced the successful application of this methodology to the Philippines.
Dr. Andy Leung (Associate Head of CEE, Associate Professor), Dr. Qi Zhao (Assistant Professor), Dr. Kai Zhou (Assistant Professor), Dr. Si-qi Ding (Research Assistant Professor), Dr. Vincent Ao (Research Assistant Professor), along with over 40 research students and staff, participated in this seminar and engaged in a comprehensive discussion.
