PolyU to launch Faculty Seminar Series featuring Deans and Heads, providing secondary school students with essential information on higher education to facilitate their life planning

In addition to focusing on their studies, students are encouraged to take ownership of their career planning. With this in mind, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is launching the first Faculty Seminar Series this year, targeting students in Secondary 3 to Secondary 6, as well as their parents and teachers. More than 30 distinguished academics from different disciplines, including faculty Deans, department Heads and other PolyU faculty members, will be invited to share important information about admission to PolyU, via seven online seminars commencing 11 May. The speakers will also share with participants the rationale behind PolyU’ s new departmental scheme-based admission, as well as the components of the various curriculums. Students will be able to gain a broader perspective and so be better prepared to set their academic goals early, and eventually better equipped for their studies and career development.

Talks by academics from eight faculties about study and career prospects

From 11 to 19 May, the Faculty Seminar Series will bring together representatives from the Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Construction and Environment, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, the School of Design and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management to give an overview of the PolyU study experience and present the special features of their individual faculty/school. They will also introduce the programmes offered by their respective faculties and help prospective students have a deeper understanding of particular industries and of their career prospects after graduation. Participants are encouraged to raise questions and interact with the speakers during the Q&A session.

“Departmental scheme-based admission” to enhance students’ competitiveness

Starting from the 2022/23 academic year, PolyU will adopt departmental scheme-based admission to provide students with a more flexible choice of undergraduate programmes in order to help better meet societal needs. Under the new arrangement, students admitted to PolyU will first select a departmental scheme, before selecting their Major in the second academic year. This will allow them more time to gain a better understanding of their own aspirations, so that they can make the most suitable choice of Major. Additionally, starting from the coming academic year, two new elements, namely “Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis” (AIDA) and “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” (IE), will be incorporated into the General University Requirements. Under the departmental scheme-based arrangement, students can also choose to take a secondary Major in AIDA and IE.

All-rounded learning support to help students excel

PolyU has always put emphasis on the whole-person development of students and provides opportunities for students with special talents through various admission schemes, such as the Special Talents Admission Scheme, the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme and the Outstanding Sportsmen Recommendation Scheme.

In order to facilitate their holistic development, PolyU furthermore offers various forms of support for students admitted through these schemes, include residential college accommodation, individual mentorship in their academic work, flexibility in learning and study assessments, extension of study periods, various scholarships and more.

PolyU will also hold the "PolyU Virtual JUPAS Consultation Day 2022: Admissions Strategies" on 21 May 2022 (Saturday), to help students who sat for the HKDSE this year to re-evaluate and possibly amend any programme choices they made before the release of the DSE results. Students will learn more about the latest admissions arrangements, key considerations in programme selection and essential interview skills through this event.
