PolyU launches the Inter-secondary School Green Deck Landscape Design Competition - registration now open!
11 Aug 2022
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has launched the Inter-secondary School Green Deck Landscape Design Competition 2022 to provide a chance for secondary school students to come up with a creative landscape design for the proposed Green Deck over the Cross Harbour Tunnel Toll Plaza in Hung Hom.
The environmental conditions in the area around the existing Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel Toll Plaza have been a major societal concern for a long time. Located in Hung Hom for more than 60 years, PolyU is committed to finding an innovative solution to help address the environmental issues and revitalise the district.

The Competition aims to enhance awareness of the Green Deck proposal in the community and secondary schools, to promote the notion of sustainable, green and healthy living as well as to support STEM education by promoting 3D modelling technology to participating teachers and students.
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Inter-secondary School Green Deck Landscape Design Competition 2022 is organised by PolyU (Green Deck Project Management Office, Department of Computing and Pao Yue-kong Library) in collaboration with the Faculty of Design and Environment of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong.
Mr Alex LUI, Project Director (Green Deck) of PolyU, said, “The environmental conditions in the area around the existing Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel Toll Plaza have been a major societal concern for a long time. Located in Hung Hom for more than 60 years, PolyU is committed to finding an innovative solution to help address the environmental issues and revitalise the district.”
The Green Deck, to be built over the Toll Plaza, would be a unique and innovative social project that will bring long-term benefits to society. The Green Deck will connect the adjacent areas, provide a variety of social facilities and form a landscaped garden over the busy cross-harbour vehicular traffic.
Local secondary schools are eligible to enter the Competition with each school able to send a maximum of two teams, each comprising two to four students. Each team is required to create a landscape design for the Green Deck by using designated software. To help the participating schools prepare for the Competition, a briefing session and a training session will be provided to teachers and students.
Trophies, certificates and cash vouchers will be awarded to the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up. The winning designs will have a chance to be showcased in future Green Deck exhibitions. Members of other shortlisted teams will also receive certificates of merit and cash vouchers as acknowledgement of their participation.
The registration deadline for the Competition is 4 November 2022. Interested parties should submit a PowerPoint presentation on or before the deadline. For more details, please visit the Competition website or contact the organiser on 34008290 (phone) or info.gdpmo@polyu.edu.hk (email).
