PolyU Design Show 2021 introduces all new interdisciplinary projects
8 Jul 2021
The PolyU Design Show 2021 organised by the School of Design of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU Design) is presenting creative design solutions by new-generation designers virtually and physically from now until 31 July 2021.
Newly featured at the Show this year are the interdisciplinary capstone projects, echoing the global trend in demand for multi-talented designers. “Design education nowadays is not only limited to providing skills training or provoking creativity, but also needs to offer an open and inspirational co-creation environment for students with different abilities and expertise to work together, learn from each other and grow together,” Professor Kun-Pyo LEE, Dean of PolyU Design said.
“Design problems have become far more complex than ever. Each problem typically requires expertise from more than one specific discipline, and therefore goes beyond an individual designer’s skillset. That is why we are trying to put students from different disciplines together to address design problems at a deeper level,” Professor Lee added.

Through the new interdisciplinary capstone projects, smart and creative minds from more than one programme are integrated to generate practical solutions on different topics from the design thinking perspective. Three interdisciplinary projects are displayed at the “Integrated Capstone” zone, namely:
- ISOASIS - a new user-centred quarantine experience;
- Never Be A Regular - an advertising campaign for “ugly” agricultural produce; and
- Relationship in Action - a campaign that promotes family harmony
These projects were accomplished through the joint efforts of students from different disciplines such as Advertising Design, Communication Design, Environment and Interior Design, Product Design, Social Design, Digital Media, and Interactive Media.
The Show also exhibits about two hundred other projects by graduates and students from various bachelor, master and doctoral programmes including Advertising Design, Communication Design, Environment and Interior Design, Product Design, Social Design, Digital Media, Interactive Media, Interaction Design, Multimedia and Entertainment Technology, Design Strategies, Design Practices, International Design and Business Management, and Urban Environments Design. In addition, there are four mini exhibitions on inclusive design, materials application, personal poster design and award-winning projects.
The Show continues to feature an online 3D immersive exhibition and newly introduces an audio guide feature for an enhanced visitor experience. Last year, the Show introduced a 3D immersive exhibition for the first time among top schools in the world and received overwhelming positive feedback.
