Summary
The advancement of broadband communication and AI frontier technologies is continuously driving the development of media technology. Efficient representation of visual media is the core foundation of video coding and video generation. The field has ushered in new opportunities and faces significant challenges of technological innovation driven by the dual forces of the breakthrough of generative AI and the growth of AI computing infrastructure. Video coding is evolving from video coding for broadcasting and internet video to machine-oriented video/feature coding, as well as expanding into immersive coding direction. The AVS and AITISA Standard Working Group is leading the development of generative video coding and visual unified representation machine vision coding standards, with data compression ratios expected to be an order of magnitude higher than existing standards. Immersive video coding is the foundational technology for future immersive visual communication, achieving compact representation and efficient transmission of content scenarios, and is an enabling technology for the development of future 6G.
