My heartiest congratulations to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as you embark on celebrations to mark your 80th anniversary. It is a significant and wonderful occasion, reflective of the many milestones PolyU has successfully passed on your way to your current high reputation as a global university.
PolyU and NUS share some broad similarities in our trajectory of growth and development. Like PolyU, NUS traces its origins from modest beginnings – PolyU as the Government Trade School in 1937, and NUS as a colonial but community-funded medical school in 1905. Both universities had to overcome a series of challenges in the intervening years in their transition to becoming full-fledged institutions of higher learning. NUS and PolyU also share a deep and continuing sense of purpose to provide the best learning environments and outcomes, and to give back to the communities who have always supported us.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University of today is a future-focused institution in a rapidly advancing Asia. As development in Asia, and in particular the Greater China Region, continues to gain pace, there will be tremendous opportunities for new ideas, solutions and technology. With its motto of “Opening Minds, Shaping the Future”, PolyU is well-positioned as a positive agent for change and advancement. I would like to wish The Hong Kong Polytechnic University all the very best for the next 80 years and beyond!
