The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is celebrating its 85th Anniversary in 2022. Our 85th Anniversary milestone gives us the chance to reflect on PolyU’s positive impact on society. For more than eight decades, PolyU and its predecessors have played an important role in the different stages of social and economic development of our community, answering to the call of the times and contributing to the advancement of Hong Kong, the Nation and the world. We take pride in the transformation and evolution of the University over time, from its inception as the Government Trade School in 1937, to assuming full university status in 1994, and today being ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by both Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE).
In addition to PolyU being recognised in prestigious university rankings, our research accomplishments have been acknowledged in the UGC’s Research Assessment Exercise 2020, where 70% of our research work was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, affirming the quality and impact of our research work. In recent years, we have also been honoured to participate in China’s historic space missions, including the Nation’s first lunar sample return mission Chang’e 5 and first Mars exploration mission Tianwen-1.
Riding on PolyU’s 85 years of history and achievements, we will continue to make impactful contributions for the benefit of Hong Kong, the Nation and the world. We are committed to nurturing successful future professionals and leaders with a deep affection for their family and nation, a global perspective and a strong sense of social responsibility. We have furthermore established the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) to conduct mission-driven interdisciplinary research to solve key societal issues. There are currently ten research institutes and five research centres under PAIR, focused on frontier areas including artificial intelligence, carbon neutrality, deep space exploration, smart cities, smart energy and more. Backed by our research strengths and expertise, PolyU will play a part in the development of Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub in the Greater Bay Area. PolyU will also promote and support entrepreneurship through education, seed funding programmes and the “GBA PolyVentures 2025” initiative in partnership with industries and investors to help translate PolyU’s research outcomes into real-world impact.
We sincerely pay tribute to everyone in the PolyU community who has played an essential role in nourishing the University’s growth. They include our former Council and Court Chairmen, former and current Council and Court members, former Presidents and Directors, management, scholars, staff, alumni and students, as well as our friends and supporters in society.
To recognise their contributions and the fact that PolyU’s success is the result of the PolyU community working together as one, our celebrations have taken a special theme:
We Are PolyU ‧ Together We Excel. By maintaining a strong connection with our thriving community, we are confident that PolyU will be able to write many new chapters, and make more contributions for the benefit of Hong Kong, our Nation and our world.
As part of the celebratory activities, PolyU has called for ideas from members of the PolyU community on 85th anniversary theme song lyrics, videos, souvenirs and memorabilia in 2021. We are really impressed by the number and the quality of entries received. Special recognitions/prizes including cash prizes, staycation packages and dining coupons of HotelICON will be given to the best entries for lyrics, souvenirs and videos, as selected by the 85th Anniversary Steering Committees as well as through public voting across PolyU community. Results will be announced via PolyU promotional platforms.

PolyU will celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2022. To mark this important milestone, we would like to welcome our 400,000+ alumni back to relive their fond memories of campus life at PolyU, to celebrate our proud history and achievements with the whole University community, and to advance PolyU as a leading university with world-class education and impactful research.
As part of the celebratory activities, we would like to call for ideas from members of the PolyU community on the following:

We invite you to develop lyrics in English and/or Chinese for PolyU’s 85th anniversary theme song.
We expect the lyrics to
|
|
|
1)
|
|
reflect PolyU’s 85th anniversary and our aspiration to be a leading university;
|
|
|
2)
|
|
be singable and memorable; and
|
|
|
3)
|
|
have an identifiable rhyme scheme or pattern which can be turned into a song that is 2-4 minutes long.

Complete the Online Submission Form and upload your song lyrics. Please explain the rationale behind your song lyrics. You may also provide specifications on the type of music style or presentation that you think will best fit the lyrics you have developed. The University will select the best submission and compose it into PolyU’s 85th anniversary theme song.

PolyU is a place where students and staff members can thrive and realise their potential. We invite you to create a short video to showcase your fun, fulfilling and rewarding experiences at PolyU. We recommend the video be filmed in 16:9 ratio, within 3 minutes in length and in mp4 or mov format. The video should cover one of the following themes:
1. Campus Life
Stories about your campus life, such as enjoyable moments, friendships, and rewarding activities or discoveries around campus or student halls
2. Research and Innovation
Stories about how your research and innovation can make an impact on society
3. Teaching and Learning
Stories about how your teaching innovations can enhance the quality of teaching and learning
4. Community Service and Engagement
Stories about your meaningful activities or projects, such as Service-Learning experience or social innovation projects, that contribute to the community

The submissions will be judged based on the following criteria: video quality, relevancy to themes, originality, appropriateness, creativity, and storytelling ability.

The University would like to give a souvenir to all stakeholders of the PolyU community in celebration of the special occasion of PolyU’s 85th anniversary. You are invited to contribute your original design of a souvenir / a series of souvenirs (physical and/or digital).
The designs will be considered based on their

creativity and originality;
|
|
|
2)
|
|
relevance to the 85th anniversary celebrations; and
|
|
|
3)
|
|
feasibility for future production of the souvenir(s) if applicable.

Sharing fond memories of PolyU and its memorabilia is a powerful way to celebrate the 85th anniversary and to showcase the milestones of our University. We invite you to contribute PolyU memorabilia, such as valuable photos, certificates, teaching materials, publications, mementos, uniforms, souvenirs, or any items related to PolyU and its forerunners. These valuable collections will be exhibited at anniversary events, and included in anniversary publications.
