| PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong was invited to speak in an RTHK radio programme Letter to Hong Kong on 23 January. In the programme, Prof. Tong shared his views on nurturing talents and talked about the post-80s generation. Prof. Tong said that universities should be responsible for nurturing outstanding talents for society and that students’ interest should be given priority focus. Focusing on the interest of students is in fact focusing on the interest of our society, because the younger generation is the pillars of our future society. The kinds of young people we have today represent the kinds of society we have in future. In his view, some post-80s young people may be dissatisfied with the present conditions, may not agree with the systems in society, and their words and actions may be radical sometimes. But in his opinion, most of them have ideals, hopes and are willing to take on responsibilities. For them, the community must take an inclusive approach and be patient with them so that they can express their views and feelings. We should have more dialogue with them instead of criticizing them. With more unity and less isolation, Hong Kong’s future will certainly be more dynamic and promising. To listen to the programme (in Chinese only), please click below URL for RTHK’s programme archive:
