PolyU develops TCM authentication and medical diagnostic tools |
Prof. David Zhang, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Computing, has been leading the Biometrics Research Centre to develop three traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnostic systems based on the diagnostic principles — inspection; auscultation and olfaction; and palpation (望聞切). The new inventions are: the Automated Tongue Image Acquisition and Analysis System which can capture the image and features of a tongue; the Pulse Wave Analysis System which can plot the signal of pulse on a graph; and the Medical Biometrics Olfaction Analysis System which can decompose a patient’s exhaled gas for further analysis using electronic olfactory technology. Using these innovative tools, patients’ health status can be measured and compared against the massive biometric data collected by the research team from over 30,000 patients in Northern China in the past 10 years for accurate diagnosis.
