PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong attended the 2012 Taiwan Higher Education Forum on 17 December, giving a keynote speech on “Internationalization, the PolyU Experience”. He said the percentage of non-local students studying at the eight UGC-funded institutions in Hong Kong has been constantly increasing over the past few years, with more than 10% in 2011/2012. Taking PolyU as an example, non-local students have made up about 14% of the undergraduate student population and about 15% of full-time permanent staff is recruited from overseas.

Local institutions actively promote internationalization with the aim of exposing students to a multicultural learning and social environment, and preparing them for an increasingly globalized economy. However, he pointed out that inadequate hostel places and tension between local and non-local students might hinder the development of internationalization.
