With her innovative "Eco-spring" project developing a spiral cutting machine for recycled plastic bottles science project as well as her hydrogen-related researches and several patented inventions, mechanical engineering PhD student, Miao Jing, won The 8th China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award. She was one of the only two students from Hong Kong universities who received this national honour in the scientific field.

To minimize the area occupied by disposed plastic bottles so as to maximize the capacity of the recycle bins, Miao Jing has explored a novel bottle-cutting method and designed a machine for this specific bottle-cutting process. The height of the spiral-cut bottles will be reduced to less than one-third of the original height, allowing capacity for more disposed plastic bottles to be put in the recycle bins.  Details>>
