Three distinguished PolyU honorary degree recipients of this year have been invited by the University to conduct lectures to share their wealth of experience in their respective professions.
The first lecture was delivered by Dr Irwin Mark Jacobs under the topic "From academic to entrepreneur to impacting the evolution of wireless". He shared his journey from an engineering professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California San Diego to Founding Chairman and CEO Emeritus of Qualcomm Incorporated. He talked about his success stories in the field of wireless technology.
Prof. Andrew Yao, renowned computer scientist and educator, gave talks on "What makes a world-leading computing department?" and "What is university education for?" to staff and students respectively. He discussed the elements of a world-class computing department and the importance of curiosity in learning and conducting research.
In the upcoming lecture to be held in November, Prof. Leon O. Chua, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, will present explicit mathematical theories to explain and generalize Stephen Wolfram's insights under the title "What's new in Wolfram's new kind of science?"
