In November, the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering organized a distinguished lecture titled "What's new in Wolfram's new kind of science?" presented by the University's honorary degree recipient of this year, Prof. Leon O. Chua, who is also Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.
Many people criticized Stephen Wolfram's monumental tome "A new kind of science" saying that a huge collection of complex dynamic phenomena was contained but the examples were mere numerical simulations without a mathematical foundation or theory. In the lecture, Prof. Chua presented explicit mathematical theories to explain and generalize Wolfram's insights.
