With her invention in polymeric optical fibre illuminative fabric, Dr Jeanne Tan at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing won the Excellent Award at Textile Art of Today, an exhibition held in Slovakia recently. Titled “Scion”, her winning fabric has adopted the three basic weaves - jacquard, double-layer and weft-backed; laser engraving and LED colour-mixing techniques to develop an interactive and illuminative effect. This fabric can come with sensors, allowing users to remotely control the colours and illumination effect through Bluetooth technology in smartphones.
