Electrical engineering PhD student Fong Yat-chi has teamed up General Manager (Projects) of HK Electric Mr Lau Chi-kwong in entering the International Competition on Second Life for Retired Batteries from Electric Vehicles (EVs) organised by the Environment Bureau. The team has won the Champion, Best “Viability” Award and the Best “Value & Impact” Award in the open group category. Their innovative proposal is to use retired batteries from EVs to develop a hybrid battery energy storage system, which serves as part of the proposed photovoltaic solar power system to supply electricity for residents of Po Toi Island.
