On 25 September, the Aviation Services Research Centre (ASRC) co-founded by PolyU and Boeing officially opened its new research facilities. Representatives from the education sector and influential local and Chinese mainland industrial partners officiated at the opening ceremony, including University Grants Committee Chairman Mr Carlson Tong and Research Grants Council Chairman Prof. Benjamin Wah.
The occasion also saw the renewal of PolyU’s partnership with Boeing for another five years. In addition, the University signed a Letter of Intent with Guangzhou Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Co Ltd, one of Asia’s leading industry service providers in maintenance, repair and overhaul.
The ASRC is backed by cutting edge research and engineering facilities and top-notch expertise at PolyU’s Industrial Centre. At the ceremony, ASRC demonstrated its state-of-the-art robotic technology to scan and analyse multiple light damages on compressors or turbines of aircrafts, and then automatically refurbish the damaged surfaces. This automation technology involving Artificial Intelligence can significantly reduce the aircraft maintenance time from four hours to 1.5 hours, standardise the effect of repairs and reduce the chances of missing any defect.
