On 26 February, a total of 28 full-time undergraduate students were bestowed awards in recognition of their excellence in academic and non-academic pursuits. Among them were winners of Outstanding Student Awards of Departments/Faculties/Schools.
This year’s “The Most Outstanding PolyU Student” award went to Amy Chan Chi-in from the Faculty of Humanities. Through organising English leadership training camps and multi-cultural workshops, she discovered that local secondary school students have little chance to practise oral English and encounter difficulties in further studies. She then co-founded the start-up DoEd with classmates to organise English cultural exchange camps and life coaching activities for secondary school students.
One of the outstanding students, Paul Szeto Chun from the Faculty of Business, volunteered at a non-governmental organisation as an exchange student in Sweden. He collected leftovers from bakeries and sent them to the homes for the homeless. Inspired by this experience, he founded an online platform in Hong Kong named “Food Savior”, facilitating restaurants to sell leftover dishes at discounted prices. Not only can customers get meals at bargain prices, restaurants can also make extra money while reducing food waste.
