Summary
The Silk Roads have been not only routes of trade but also major communication arteries connecting the East and West since ancient times. Dr Joseph S. P. Ting, the former Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History, will again bring us a talk series and a cultural tour which enable participants to understand the origins and evolution of both the land and maritime Silk Roads, and to explore the East-West interaction from historical, cultural, religious, and artistic perspectives.
Talk 1: “The Silk Road of the Land: The Collision and Integration of East and West”
8 November 2016 (Tuesday)
The talk will cover the origin, development and fall of the Silk Road of the land and show how the east and the west influenced and integrated with each other by exchanging goods, ideas and cultures along the Silk Road.
Talk 2: “The Silk Road of the Sea: The Rise of Maritime Civilizations”
15 November 2016 (Tuesday)
The Silk Road of the sea started to take form and develop as the land one was on the wane. The talk will discuss the influence of the shifting of the centre of civilization on East-West interaction.
“A Historical Tour of Quanzhou”
12 - 15 January 2017 (Thursday - Sunday)
The tour will be led by Dr Ting from 12 to 15 January 2017. It is for PolyU students and staff only.

About Dr Joseph S. P. Ting:
Dr Joseph S. P. Ting was born in Guangzhou and is a native of Fengshun County in Guangdong. He acquired his BA, M.Phil and PhD from the University of Hong Kong. Prior to his retirement, he was the Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History.
He is currently an Adjunct Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Comparative and Public History, Department of History, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Expert Adviser of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Museum of History; member of the Antiquities Advisory Board; trustee of the Lord Wilson Heritage’s Trust; Vice-President of the Local Gazetteer Office; Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society; Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Education; Honorary Fellow of the University of Hong Kong; and adviser to a number of cultural institutions in Hong Kong and on the Mainland.
