Summary
Penang and Ipoh are both historic old towns in Malaysia. Penang’s capital, George Town, has been listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, while Ipoh was once important as the location of the world's richest tin-producing field. Both towns are dotted with examples of indigenous architecture and historic monuments of different cultures and religions, showing the cities’ multicultural tolerance and cosmopolitan charm. Dr Ting will unfold to participants the fascinating stories of these timeworn cities in Malaysia.
Sites to be visited (subject to changes without prior notice):
St. George's Church, Old Protestant Cemetery, Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, Pinang Peranakan Mansion, Sun Yat-sen Museum Penang, Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Ng See Kah Mieu, Toishan Ningyang Nui Kwon, Ipoh Old Town, Han Chin Pet Soo Museum and etc.
- Priority will be given to applicants who have attended the Talk “Multi-ethnical Societies in Malaysia” on 9 November 2017.
- For PolyU full-time students and staff only.
- Lots will be drawn by computer to determine the successful applicants.
- The programme will be conducted in Cantonese.
- Tour fee is required.

About Dr Joseph S. P. Ting:
Dr Joseph S. P. Ting was born in Guangzhou and is a native of Fengshun County in Guangdong. He acquired his BA, M.Phil and PhD from the University of Hong Kong. Prior to his retirement, he was the Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History.
He is currently an Adjunct Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Comparative and Public History, Department of History, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Expert Adviser of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Museum of History; member of the Antiquities Advisory Board; trustee of the Lord Wilson Heritage’s Trust; Vice-President of the Local Gazetteer Office; Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society; Honorary Fellow of The Education University of Hong Kong; Honorary Fellow of the University of Hong Kong; and adviser to a number of cultural institutions in Hong Kong and on the Mainland.
