Guidelines and Information

info Introduction

The L2L Learning Portfolio Contest is part of the “Goal Beeyond” Learning to Learn (L2L) Event Series 2023 held by the Educational Development Centre (EDC). This contest invites students to share an episode of their experience of pursuing their dreams, in which they set a goal and try to achieve it in the space of one semester. It takes place in January to May 2023.

goal Objectives

Through this event, we hope to:

  1. Promote a sense of ownership over their own learning and development process among students.
  2. Provide a platform for students to share their good practices and valuable experiences in L2L.

eligibility Eligibility

All PolyU students are welcome to participate in this contest as individuals. One student can make one entry only.

join How to Join?

To join the contest, you need to do the following in Semester 2, 2022/23:

  1. Set a goal for yourself and share it on the Contest’s “Padlet Wall” and register your interest in entering the contest by filling in a simple online form (by 31 January 2023 Extended: 17 February 2023). The goal can be anything related to your personal aspiration. It must be something that requires you to learn something and develop as a learner. It should be something that the participant can realistically achieve within one semester.
  2. Take actions to try to achieve the goal over the course of the semester.
  3. Share your story and reflections through a mini learning portfolio in a “Sway Presentation” format (the link will be activated in due course) near the end of the semester (by 14 May 2023). The content should cover the following: What is your dream/aspiration? What was your goal for this semester? What did you do to pursue the goal? To what extent has the goal been achieved? What did you learn about yourself as a learner in the process? How can you further develop as a learner? What’s next from here? The story should be told in around 500 words (written in English; no more than 800 words) with no more than 20 pictures and 3 minutes of video material (if any) as illustrations.

A portfolio will be disqualified if it contains:

  • Copyrighted/unlicensed materials
  • Offensive language
  • Inappropriate or illegal contents

award Awards and Judging Criteria

Best Learning Portfolio (Gold)     Decided by judging panel
   Best Learning Portfolio (Silver)
   Best Learning Portfolio (Bronze)
Best Portfolio Design     Decided by design expert
  The 'Elemental' Awards
  (Fire, Earth, Water, Air)
    Decided by viewers votes

The Best Learning Portfolio Awards will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance: To what extent does the portfolio tell the story of the student pursuing a self-determined goal and becoming a better learner in the process?
  • Reflection: How deeply did the student reflect on the learning experience and his/her development as a learner?
  • Inspiration: To what extent is this a story that will inspire others to start chasing their own dreams or developing as learners? (See also the Elemental awards below.)

The Best Portfolio Design Award will be decided by a design expert, who will select the winning portfolio based on its communicative quality, aesthetic quality, and creativity and originality.

The ‘Elemental’ Awards will be determined completely by viewers’ votes. There will be four awards corresponding to the four classical elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Viewers will be invited to vote for the portfolios that have the biggest impact on them:

  • The ‘Fire’ Award: It makes me want to pursue my aspiration.
  • The ‘Earth’ Award: It makes me want to change the way I learn.
  • The ‘Water’ Award: It makes me reflect on my learning.
  • The ‘Air’ Award: It makes me think about learning differently.

The award will go to the portfolio with the most vote. One portfolio can only get one Elemental Award. If the portfolio getting the most vote has already been identified as a winner for another Elemental Award, the portfolio with the second highest vote will be the winner, so on so forth.
