Title:
Cognitive biases and team decision-making on locating underground void by geophysical technologies

Abstract:
Originally positioned as a video production unit, Exposure Studio Productions (ESP) has gradually evolved into a training ground, a stage for online live performances, a teaching space where courses are instructed by students, and a production crew that partners with academics and other staff in media production and learning and teaching projects.
Cognitive biases and team decision-making are two major, yet often overlooked, factors affecting imaging processes and diagnostic results of large-scale and regular geophysical applications in cities. These factors have been measured and evaluated through a 12-hour GPR blind test of void hunting in underground utility survey lab. Over confidence, anchoring and adjustment, information and confirmation are the most common cognitive biases heavily affecting the decision-making process by the students:. We conclude that for any successful geophysical prospecting of the subsurface, measuring, understanding and mitigating cognitive biases is an essential component of success.
