Prof. Edward CHAN was awarded the prestigious RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme
The Research Grants Council's (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) aims to provide sustained support to exceptionally outstanding researchers at UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong. Nominees are assessed based on various criteria, including leadership quality, vision in their chosen area of research, and the merit of the research proposal.
In the SRFS 2022/23, Prof. CHAN, Professor of APSS, has been awarded grants for the research project entitled “Family Polyvictimization and Social Policy Responses in East Asian Societies” – another testament to APSS scholars’ accomplishments and research excellence.

Double Congratulations
Prof. Sylvia CHEN, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and Professor of APSS, was selected to receive the Outstanding International Psychologist Award conferred by the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 52 (International Psychology).
The Outstanding International Psychologist Awards recognise outstanding contributions to international psychology through significant research, teaching, advocacy, and contributions to international organisations. These awards are presented to two psychologists: one from within the United States and another from outside the United States.
Prof. CHEN also won the Faculty Awards in Teaching (Individual) of the Faculty Awards/Prizes for Outstanding Achievement 2022.

APSS received Funding Support for the China Social Work Research Centre and Institute of Active Ageing To continue to elevate the profile of Peking University–The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre (the Centre) and expand the research agenda as China enters a new era, APSS synthesises the areas of research and responds to a number of key state policies. In June 2022, the team led by Dr Ben KU, Associate Professor of APSS, successfully received funding support from PolyU for the Centre for a research proposal entitled “Responding to Key State Policies in Xi’s Era: A Synthesis of Social Work and Social Development, and the Way Forward.” (Project ID P0042704).
To reinforce its positive reputation and achievements, and to maximise its research and social impact for the betterment of the ageing society, Dr Xue BAI, Associate Professor of APSS and the Director of the Institute of Active Ageing (IAA), has proposed to expand its scope of work and successfully secured funding totaling HK$7.5 million from PolyU in June 2022. The IAA will be further developed into the Research Centre for Gerontology and Family Studies to embrace broader agenda for future research, education, and practice.

Sweeping Awards at the Learning to Learn (L2L) Video Contest The video entitled “The inspiring and transparent PADLET for better learners” by Dr Rodney CHU, Assistant Professor of APSS, won both the “Most Inspiring Video Award (Gold) and “Most Popular Video Award,” while the video entitled “How to be productive at home” by Ms Phyllis ZHAO, a final year student of BA (Hons) Social Work, won the “Most Creative Video Award (Silver).”
The Learning to Learn Community of Practice (L2L CoP) launched the L2L Video Contest to engage teachers and students in understanding and promoting L2L through video production and to share their insights and discoveries with a view to helping others to become better learners. Project 1: Research on Service Impact of Project LEGEND Project 2: Fostering Empathy through Virtual Reality and Art Therapy: A Study with Adolescents in Small Group Homes
Prof. Eric CHUI, Professor and Head of APSS, has been commissioned by the Hong Kong PHAB Association to study the learning experiences of young people with special educational needs, and he also secured a research grant from the “Inter-Faculty Collaboration Scheme for FH, FHSS and FENG (3rd Round).”

Prof. Daniel SHEK presented a report at the biennial Psychological Counselling Summit
The Psychological Counselling Summit (海峽兩岸暨港澳地區高校心理輔導與諮詢高峰論壇) was held from 26 July to 31 July 2022 at Hong Kong Shue Yan University with the theme “Anti-pandemic, growth and development”. Prof. Daniel SHEK, Associate Vice President (Undergraduate Programme) and Chair Professor of APSS, presented a thematic report at the summit.

A Research Sharing Seminar for the Elders
Dr Crystal KWAN, Assistant Professor of APSS, co-organised a research sharing seminar with the Hong Kong Church Network for the Poor (教會關懷貧窮網絡) entitled “Understanding Low-Income Elders who live alone or with spouse only: Their Voices (基層長者生活研究分享研討會).” The event took place on 24 and 30 June 2022 at PolyU campus.
In the sharing session, the research team shared their findings regarding the issues and strengths of elderly respondents. The participants were invited to share their experiences, thoughts, and perspectives regarding living with an elderly.

Sharing on Nurturing Resilience in Young Learners
Dr Jessie CHOW, Registered Educational Psychologist at The University of Hong Kong, gave a sharing on resilience implementation with young learners. The sharing was co-organised by Yan Oi Tong Au Suet Ming Child Development Centre and Mental Health Research Centre on 3 August 2022. The event was hosted by Prof. Sylvia CHEN, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Director of the Yan Oi Tong Au Suet Ming Child Development Centre, Associate Director of the Mental Health Research Centre and Professor of APSS.
After the talk, Dr Huijing LU, Associate Professor of APSS, and Dr Herrick WONG, Teaching Fellow of APSS, joined the discussion on which stage in youth should resilience start to be nurtured and how to prepare adults as trainers of resilience. Over 40 participants attended the online sharing.

Introducing BA (Hons) Scheme in APSS programme to secondary school students
APSS collaborated with GEO to hold the PolyU Summer Programme for Secondary School Students 2022 on 8 August 2022. We welcomed 40 S4 and S5 students with an introduction to the new undergraduate programmme by Dr Kong YAM and Dr Raymond TAM, co-programme leaders of BA (Hons) Scheme in Applied Social Sciences. Seven current students from BA (Hons) in Social Work and BA (Hons) in Social Policy and Social Entrepreneurship joined the event to share the experiences and attainment during their study in APSS.

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS) Seminar Series was successfully held in the evening on 17 May 2022. Over 10 distinguished academics from different departments, including the Faculty Dean, Department Head / Associate Heads, and other departmental members, were invited to share important information about admissions to PolyU via the online seminar. More than 320 participants, mostly students and their parents, joined the event. The participants were able to gain pertinent knowledge and a broader perspective from the seminar about admissions to the University and the Faculty's programs. This knowledge would help them set their academic goals early, and eventually prepare them for a fruitful academic and career development. PolyU Innovation and Technology Open Day (PolyU I&T Open Day) was held on 16 July 2022. As one of the signature events for PolyU’s 85th Anniversary, the PolyU I&T Open Day showcased PolyU’s latest endeavours in interdisciplinary research, innovation, knowledge transfer, and entrepreneurship for the benefit of Hong Kong, the Nation and the world. Innovation and technology entrepreneurs, industry partners, start-ups, researchers, young talents, and students were all invited to join the Open Day.
APSS had a consultation booth at Fong Shu Chuen Hall to introduce our undergraduate programmes to secondary school students who were curious about the study and learning experience at PolyU.

Kick-off Ceremony of APSS Mentorship Programme 2022-24 APSS Mentorship Programme 2022-24 aims to provide an opportunity for fostering networks and friendships among our graduating students with experienced alumni for advice on professional and career development. The kick-off ceremony of the programme was held on 25 June 2022. A total of 26 alumni and students were matched successfully for this two-year mentorship programme running from June 2022 to June 2024. Matched mentors and mentees are expected to meet at least once every half a year. Students are welcome to initiate gatherings with mentors via different communication channels. For a more fruitful mentoring relationship, each mentor-mentee group is also partnered with another group to enhance the networks and experience.

Welcoming new students of 2022/23 Taught Postgraduate programmes |
Welcoming Freshmen of 2022 Cohort to BA (Hons) Programmes APSS held the Undergraduate Programme Orientation for 150+ freshmen who have joined the APSS family in the new academic year on 23 August 2022. Prof. Eric CHUI, Head and Professor of APSS, warmly welcomed all participants. He emphasized the trend of interdisciplinary communication and global citizenship, and highlighted the impressive average HKDSE score of the newly launched BA (Hons) Scheme in Applied Social Sciences programme this year. Furthermore, Dr Lu YU, the Chairman of the Undergraduate Programme Committee, greeted the participants and introduced both academic and administrative staff to new students. The Programme Leaders and Academic Advisors were delighted to meet with the new students on this occasion. There were 111 students attending the orientation.

APSS Graduates Association Annual General Meeting and Alumni Sharing
The APSS Graduates Association Annual General Meeting was held successfully on 27 August 2022, in which new members had finished their registration and completed the committee election for the coming year.
APSS Graduates Association was honoured to have Mr Charles CHAN, Executive Director of The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) and APSS Outstanding Alumni 2022, to share on strategies and techniques for planning and designing service proposals. A note of appreciation was presented to Charles at the end of the sharing session.

Prof. SHUM and Dr SIU were interviewed on the RTHK TV programme “Anti-pandemic News Express,” broadcast on 4 June 2022 on various topics. Prof. David SHUM, Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, and Dr Judy SIU, Associate Professor of APSS, elaborated on their study about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by the pandemic.

Prof. Eric CHUI shared in a survey conference
Prof. Eric CHUI, Professor and Head of APSS, has participated in a survey conference about the career path of Hong Kong high school students organised by St. James’ Settlement. Prof. CHUI said, “The pandemic which had altered the students’ living and learning models might cause them yearning for a sense of security, and hence prefer the traditional working mode.”

Student Corner
Three Talents enrol at APSS through School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme PolyU has admitted 26 secondary students this year with diversified talents through the first School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme/學校推薦直接錄取計劃 (SNDAS). The scheme aims at recognising the talent of local secondary school students that HKDSE could not fully assess. APSS is one of the programmes with the largest number of students enrolled. Three students who enrolled via SNDAS have excellent performance in social service, and they will be admitted to the BA (Hons) Scheme in Applied Social Sciences in the coming academic year.

Rising Stars in Social Work: Being Reflective, Confident and Thankful
Eleven Outstanding APSS Students Honoured with the Coveted HSBC Scholarships 2021/22 The Department of Applied Social Sciences is pleased to announce that 11 BA (Hons) Social Work students have been selected as recipients of the coveted HSBC Scholarships!
Sunny LAM Chun Ngai, a social work year-4 student, received the HSBC Hong Kong Scholarship, which is accompanied by a HK$50,000 award in recognition of his excellent academic records and community service.
Ten APSS students were also awarded the Scholarship grant of HK$25,000 each as a recognition of their outstanding academic performance and a strong commitment to the betterment of society.

Fostering Closer Ties with APSS Student Association President and core members of the 29th APSS Departmental Society (APSSDS) Empatija have met with Prof. Eric CHUI, Professor and Head of APSS and Dr Kong YAM, Senior Teaching Fellow of APSS and Chairperson of Student and Alumni Affairs Committee to confirm its affiliation with APSS on 23 June 2022.
The student society will be named The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Department of Applied Social Sciences Student Association (APSSSA)/香港理工大學應用社會科學系會 with effect from 13 July 2022.

APSS outstanding student-athletes exchange ideas on their colourful university life
To connect with our undergraduate students, several student-athletes were invited to share their experiences and reflections on sportsmanship and university life with Prof. Eric CHUI, Dr Kong YAM, Dr Rita CHEUNG, Dr Raymond TAM and Dr Yanto CHANDRA on 23 June 2022. Seven APSS student-athletes were encouraged to exchange ideas on how to achieve optimum performance in both the classroom and the field of play.

A Wrap-up for the Junior Researcher Mentoring Programme 2022
The closing ceremony of the Junior Researcher Mentoring Programme 2022 organised by the Global Engagement Office (GEO) was successfully held on 23 August 2022. This programme provides secondary school students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of a chosen research topic and to nurture their analytical and research skills between April and August 2022.
Welcoming APSS Inbound Exchange Students – Introducing Mid-Autumn Festival APSS held a gathering for inbound exchange students of Semester 1 2022/23 on 9 September 2022. They had the chance to network and engage in cultural exchange with our local and mainland students. The exchange students also shared their experiences with living and studying in Hong Kong so far while their fellow local students offered tips to make the most of their stay in Hong Kong. The event took place the day before Mid-Autumn Festival, so traditional lanterns and mooncakes were presented to our exchange students to have a taste of the festive season.
