Congratulations to the BRE research team, under the guidance of Prof. Meng NI, Associate Dean, Faculty of construction and environment, was awarded “The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Celebration of 25th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to the Motherland Youth Innovation Grand Prize Award in Qianhai-Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao-Taiwan Youth Innovation and
Entrepreneurship Competition (Hong Kong Region, Tertiary Division).
The winning research project is “Zinc-Air Battery for Long-Duration Energy Storage”. To cope with the increasing proportion of renewable energy in China, and maintain a stable and safe power supply, the electricity system should be able to support high wattage with long-term energy storage. The team developed the “zinc-air battery”, which is a promising technology as a long-duration energy storage device with the advantages of low cost, high safety, and large discharge capacity. The battery working principle is that the zinc anode reacts with the ambient air to generate electricity, and this process is highly reversible.
