HKIS Scholarship and 2023 Dissertation Awards Presentation Ceremony

> We are proud to celebrate the persistence and outstanding achievements of our final-year students. This year, our undergraduate and postgraduate students have been honored with the Hong Kong Institute of Surveying (HKIS) – Scholarship and Outstanding Dissertation Awards 2023. The Awards Presentation Ceremony, held at the Surveyors Learning Centre of HKIS in July 2024, was graced by the presence of Sr Francis LAM, HKIS President, Sr Steven TANG, Chairman of Board of Education; and Sr Dr LEUNG Mei Yung, Chairman of Research Committee. They welcomed the attendees and delivered inspiring speeches. Dr Esther YUNG, Associate Head (Teaching) of BRE and Dr Jeff SHEN, Assistant Professor of BRE were also in attendance to congratulate our students on their remarkable accomplishments. > Huge Congratulations to Ir Dr David KWOK Tai Wai. Ir Dr Kwok has been selected for this year’s ‘Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU BRE’ in recognition of his distinguished accomplishments in his profession and significant contributions to the Department, PolyU and the community. His illustrious achievements and valuable contributions have earned him the very well-deserved honour.

PolyU Summer Institute 2024 - 3D Printing Lightweight Structure Game at BRE

> As part of the signature event ‘PolyU Summer Institute’ in July, following the welcome remarks by Prof. Ni Meng, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) and Chair Professor of BRE, over 100 students participated in a thematic 3D printing lightweight structure game at the Building Technology Laboratory of BRE. They learned how to effectively utilise 3D printing technology to create lightweight structures. This engaging activity showcased the integration of advanced technologies into our curriculum and the construction industry. The feedback was very positive, with students thoroughly enjoying the event and gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible! We look forward to welcoming more young minds in the future!

Research Project on ‘Safety Vest Exosuit’ Featured in Ming Pao’s Interview

> The innovative research project on the 'Safety Vest Exosuit,' led by Mr LEI Ting, a BRE research student under the supervision of Dr Kelvin HEUNG, Research Assistant Professor of BRE and Dr JoonOh SEO, Associate Professor of BRE, was highlighted in a recent interview with Ming Pao Daily News." This innovative exosuit is designed to significantly reduce the risk of injuries for construction workers byproviding supportive force to their lower back. Its key features include: • Lightweight and Compact Design: Engineered for comfort and ease of movement. • Integrated Safety Vest: Combines safety with functionality. • Advanced Technology: Equipped with six pneumatic artificial muscles and a movement sensor. • Minimal Weight: Weighs approximately 2 kg. • Cost-Effective: Estimated price is less than HKD 1,000 (around USD 130).   The exosuit has already achieved recognition, winning the Merit Prize in the Math & Physics/Mechanics & Control Systems category at the 10th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (2024). The next step is to conduct field tests with construction workers. ACBC Workshop 2024 - A Resounding Success!

> The Asian Coalition for Building Science and Construction Engineering (ACBC) Workshop 2024, held from 8 to 10 July in Hong Kong, was a resounding success! Since its launch in 2006, the ACBC Workshop has been dedicated to fostering close connections among participating universities and enriching the learning experiences of faculty members and students in diverse construction practices across Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. This year, BRE was privileged to host the event, welcoming around 70 students and faculty members from the University of Seoul, Kindai University, and BRE of PolyU. With the theme of 'Application of Innovative Technologies for MiC Projects’, the ACBC Workshop featured a range of insightful talks, engaging discussions, hands-on experiences with the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) System, Motion Simulator, 3D Printing for Construction and Exoskeleton Suits, informative site visits, and a thrilling student competition. The reconvening of the ACBC Workshop in Hong Kong after the pandemic was a testament to the resilience and dedication of our academic community. The collaborative spirit and innovative ideas shared during the event have set a new benchmark for future workshops. A heartfelt thank you to all the participants, speakers, and companies for making the ACBC Workshop 2024 an unforgettable experience. > During the ‘One-day University Students at BRE of PolyU’ event in July, a group of secondary school students had a taste of university life, and explored BRE and its programmes. While visiting, they had the chance to interact with cutting-edge facilities, including the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) System, Motion Simulator, and Building Information Modelling (BIM). This enjoyable day was packed with an engaging lecture, demonstrations and hands-on experiences.

Ir Prof. Albert CHAN Receives Prestigious Medal of Honour for Outstanding Contributions

> Ir Prof. Albert CHAN, Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management, is honoured with the prestigious Medal of Honour by the HKSAR Government in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the academic and construction sectors over the years. Gaining a wealth of wisdom throughout his journey, Ir Prof. Chan is an accomplished professional with extensive experience inresearch within the realm of construction engineering and management. His research has made a significant impact on the construction industry, leading to changes in policy decisions. With over 1,000 research outputs and key roles in various international research councils, Ir Prof. Chan’s impact on project management and success, construction procurement and relational contracting, public-private partnerships, and construction health and safety is truly inspiring. Ir Prof. Chan presently serves as Dean of Students, Associate Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, Able Endowed Professor in Construction Health and Safety, Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management, and Chief Warden of PolyU Students Halls of Residence at PolyU.
