BRE Students Winning Awards of Hong Kong Housing Society

In recognition of the excellence of high performing students, the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) awarded a group of local tertiary institutions’ students, four of whom are from our Department, in the 12th HKHS Award Presentation Ceremony on 21 January 2017. This achievement gave a strong spur to our winning students to aim high and realise their potential. They include Cheung Yiu Sing (Property Management Programme), Cheung Yuk Nam (Surveying Programme), Sze Cheuk Lam (Building Engineering and Management Programme) and Wong Kit Ming (Building Technology and Management Programme-Surveying). The Award Presentation Ceremony was full of delights and volleys of applause. For the Department, Prof. Eddie Hui, Programme Leader of Property Management Programme, extended our warmest congratulations to the four students in the Ceremony while they were very grateful to receive the certificates from Mr. Marco Wu, HKHS Chairman. The Hong Kong Housing Society Award dates back to 2006 with the purposes of recognizing students with outstanding academic performance, providing financial support to needy students, nurturing young talents for the housing industry and supporting local housing development. In addition, HKHS realised the growing demand for well-trained elderly services professionals that is a matter of great concern to the community. Consequently, since 2012, the HKHS Award has extended to courses related to elderly-care services.

BRE Students’ Hard Work Deserving the Best Presentation Award in The Paul Y. Engineering BIM Competition 2016

Bravo! The Best Presentation Award goes to a team of our students in ‘The Paul Y. Engineering BIM Competition 2016 –Design A Paul Y. Innovation Tower on a 70-shaped Site’. The team,namely ‘Hope Builder’ was made of Chen Jueqi from our Surveying Programme and Lau Ka Yi, Jenny Wong, Ceci Wong and Wu Pei from our Building Engineering and Management Programme. In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Paul. Y. Engineering, the Competition encouraged participating students to design a BIM model of a Paul Y. Innovation Tower set on a 70-shaped site which their architectural skills and BIM knowledge were the major factors in the evaluation of a panel of judges. It was open to all full-time students from any discipline in post-secondary institutions in Hong Kong. Jueqi of Hope Builder says, “We embarked on this challenging yet exciting project in last summer break.And the Competition enabled us to explore the Building Information Modelling (BIM) more fully and be more prepared for our future careers.” Jueqi adds, “Since all of us had the full-time internship in the daytime during the summer break, we had to work at the project nearly every evening. Facing the time constraints and the technical issues, we had a great deal of painstaking research and sought advice from Prof. Heng Li, Dr Patrick Fong and Dr. Huang Ting of the Department as well as Mr. Alex Choy and Mr. Eric Tsang Chi Lung from Industry Centre.Our sincere gratitude goes to all of them.” The outstanding features including high practicability and sustainability as well as well-justified budget characterized their model.They were very honoured that they forwarded to the final round, the Presentation Workshop and got the Award. The team’s perseverance, creativity and hard work overcame a series of difficulties throughout the Competition over a couple of months. Their great efforts were eventually awarded with the success that not only gave the team every confidence to take on new challenges a head but also brought a blaze of inspirations to other students. Student Visit to Disadvantaged Households

Ticking all the right boxes, a meaningful community service project was a great success to increase the elderly’s awareness of home safety and enhance our students’ sense of social responsibility a few months ago. In late 2016, the four organizing parties including the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE), the Urban Renewal Authority(URA), the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society Senior Citizen Centre and the Engineers Without Borders joined forces to work at a voluntary community service project in To Kwa Wan that is one of the oldest districts characterised with a lot of dilapidated buildings. This two-day project consisted of three parts, Site Survey, Building Inspection and Home Visits so as to 1) explore the surrounding recreational facilities and community services in the district, 2) examine the building conditions of the households and 3) study the satisfaction of living areas and the problems. Under the leadership of our Lecturer, Dr Barbara Leung and the URA volunteers,a big team of nearly 40 students from the four Departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment paid a hearty visit to more than 30 households in To Kwa Wan after the site survey and the building inspection. The participating students shared that after the home visit to the disadvantaged households,they became more aware of the real needs of the elderly in terms of home safety. It was also fortunate for the students to share what they learnt on lessons with others.Being proactive to have hands-on experience, learn about problems and find out solutions means a lotto them. The participating parties had a very enjoyable time.All our good wishes were given to the elderly through our gifts and sharing on home safety.  

Schuman & Shell Winning ‘CIB Sebestyen Future Leaders Award’

 ‘CIB Sebestyen Future Leaders Award 2016’ goes to our PhD students, Ms Schuman Lam (Principal Investigator) and Mr. Shell Li (Co-investigator). The winning proposal is ‘Empirical Study on Integrated Design & Delivery Solutions (IDDS) by Developing a CIB Interactive Virtual Community’ which will be executed in collaboration with CIB Priority Theme Group: IDDS –Integrated Design & Delivery Solutions and UiTM CIB Student Chapter, Malaysia. This proposal is to develop a framework and the action plans for setting up an interactive online platform of integrated solutions for CIB members and CIB Student Chapters by borrowing the concept of IDDS. The platform is internet-action-application-based, with worldwide student chapters as the regional drivers and mediators who will motivate all the stakeholders to interact and communicate with each other on a regular basis so that possible collaboration on projects will be facilitated. Schuman emphasizes,“The advice from Prof. Francis Wong, the Former Honorary Advisor for the PolyU CIB Student Chapter, helped a lot in the completion of this winning project. Meanwhile, Prof. Ni Meng who is the current Honorary Advisor is very supportive of the Student Chapter. We feel very grateful for all that they have done.” Congratulations to Schuman and Shell! Stephen Advising Law Students from the Globe

With the expertise, Mr. Stephen David Mau, our Assistant Professor, was invited to advise law students from the globe in the Foreign Direct Investment. Stephen says, “It was my great honour to join this marvellous campaign. I served as the President of the Arbitration Tribunal in this campaign’s International Pre-moot in Sao Paulo, Brazil in late 2016.Approximately,16 teams of law students competed in this regional pre-moot.” After that, Stephen took the important roles ofthe Arbitrator and the Tribunal President in the general rounds and the Arbitrator in the quarter-final round of the global competition in the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.As one of the arbitrators, in addition to judging, Stephen gave advice to the 53 teams of about 250lawstudents from 21 countries in terms of their legal oral advocacy skills. Stephen enjoyed very much sharing his professional knowledge and experience with all participating law students.

Ranked 15th in the subject ‘Architecture and Built Environment’ by QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 (16th in 2016)

 PolyU climbed to the 15thin the world for the subject of ‘Architecture/Built Environment’ in ‘QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017’. In terms of the two objective contributors to the achievement, ‘Citations per Paper’ and ‘H-index Citations’, we got the respective scores, 96.9 and 100.
